Frances Semple
A Void - figurative, female, resin and wood table-top sculpture

2019

About the Item

Frances Semple’s beautiful and elegant sculptures often appear in motion. Defying gravity, a horizontal figure appears to float on its back above its shadow. This table top piece is made of resin and has a black wood base. Is the title a reference to the biblical use of the word void which means a ‘place of formlessness or emptiness?’ Edition four of nine. Also available in bronze, ask for pricing. “One of my long-standing curiosities is the way internal and external forces pass through our lives leaving their mark like weather on a landscape. I use the human figure as a vehicle to explore the form and textures from these observations." Frances Semple Born in 1956 in Scotland, Frances Semple grew up in Brampton, Ontario. She studied sculpture and mould making at the Ontario College of Art and continued her studies in Florence, Italy and Edinburgh, Scotland. She acquired a BFA from Emily Carr University of Art and Design in Vancouver. She has exhibited throughout Canada and in the U.S. Her work is held in numerous public and private collections.
