Gregor Turk
"Paris #3" - ceramic tablet - wall sculpture - map of Paris - France - Puryear

2021

About the Item

A ceramic wall sculpture featuring a map of Paris, France. Black and white with a touch of green. Gregor is inspired by the works of Martin Puryear, James Turrell, Louise Bourgeois, Barbara Hepworth, Christo, Claes Oldenburg, Louise Nevelson, Robert Arneson and Brancusi. As a self-proclaimed topophiliac, Gregor Turk is known for ceramic sculptures, photography, mixed-media constructions and various public art installations, with the most recent at the Metropolitan Library in Atlanta, Georgia. Turk focuses on the fundamental qualities of mapping – “the mysteriousness, inherent biases, cultural authoritativeness, and ability to simultaneously represent and distort reality.” His passion is not necessarily the actual geographic information, but rather what that information tells us about ourselves as individuals and as a culture. Turk received an education from both Rhodes College and Boston University and between degrees served as a Peace Corps Volunteer in Liberia, West Africa. His work has been featured in numerous solo and group exhibitions at institutions such as: The Museum of Contemporary Art Georgia, Delaware Center of Contemporary Arts, Ace Art, and Downey Museum of Art.

  • Village démocratie. Phases 1 et 2
    By Karine Giboulo
    Located in Montreal, Quebec
After visiting the underworld of overconsumption in "Made in China" (All you can eat and Electronic Village, 2008), Giboulo gravitates to a different aspect of economic globalization and urbanization in this work: the uncontrolled growth of slums (principally in the Southern hemisphere and the East), where the statistics are alarming. As life in the country becomes increasingly difficult, the migration of their agrarian people to urban centers regularly transforms the hopes and dreams of rural dwellers into a second nightmare. In truth, it is more accurate to speak of over-urbanization, of “slumization” - to borrow the term from the sociologist Mike Davis...
