Starting as a modest boutique, Balenciaga evolved to transform the landscape of women’s fashion with shapes and contours during the middle of the 20th century that were nothing less than groundbreaking. Today, the brand is as venturesome as ever and is well known for its shoes, handbags, sneakers, streetwear and other clothing and accessories.

Though he was born in the quiet fishing village of Getaria in Spain’s Basque region, Cristóbal Balenciaga (1895–1972) was destined to reshape modern fashion. As a child, he worked alongside his seamstress mother. Showing immense talent, he earned commissions as a teenager from local patron Marquesa de Casa Torres, who paid for his tailoring education in Madrid. In 1917, he established his first haute couture house — named Eisa, for his mother — in the trendy resort town San Sebastián. He soon followed it with boutiques in Madrid and Barcelona, drawing such clientele as the Spanish royal family.

When the Spanish Civil War put a hold on his prospects in Spain, the designer moved to Paris, opening a house on Avenue Georges V in 1937. There, Balenciaga rubbed elbows with fashion greats like Coco Chanel and Elsa Schiaparelli and quickly won over clients like Gloria Guinness, Pauline de Rothschild and Wallis Simpson, Duchess of Windsor.

As a couturier, Balenciaga drew from his Spanish heritage for ideas, riffing on everything from matador costumes and flamenco dresses to the paintings of Diego Velázquez, whose portraits of Spanish princesses famously inspired Balenciaga’s Infanta gown.

An expert tailor, he experimented with sculptural silhouettes that didn’t follow the body. Some of his notable designs include the 1953 balloon jacket, and from 1957, the cocoon coat, the baby-doll dress and the sack dress, which he popularized with his good friend designer Hubert de Givenchy. All of these could be considered not just the masterpieces of haute couture, but also objets d’art in their own right, leading to Balenciaga’s nickname, “The Master.”

Balenciaga continued designing until 1968, when he retired after three decades of influential work and his fashion house went dormant. The rights to Balenciaga were acquired by Jacques Bogart S.A. in 1986. Under designer Michel Goma, who focused on ready-to-wear, the brand experienced a resurgence, with his first collection introduced in 1987.

The brand returned to high fashion with the arrival of designer Josephus Thimister in 1992. It has since been led by a series of creative directors who have paid homage to Balenciaga’s iconic designs, including Nicolas Ghesquière, Alexander Wang and, most recently, Demna Gvasalia. In 2011, a museum celebrating Balenciaga’s legacy opened in his hometown in Spain, commemorating where it all began.

Finding the Right sunglasses for You

A pair of vintage designer sunglasses can be a game-changing finishing touch to your ensemble.

No matter your age or general fashion sensibility, wearing sunglasses may already be part of your regular outdoor routine owing to their practicality. Most sunglasses protect the eyes from harmful UV (ultraviolet) rays — and not merely on sunny days. Glasses that utilize color-enhancing lenses, which feature specific coatings or filter tints, can limit the amount of light coming through, while polarized lenses substantially reduce glare.

So while their usefulness is well known, let’s face it, a good pair of sunglasses can be stylish too.

People have been making a statement with iconic eyewear for a while — sunglasses garnered popularity with the Hollywood set in the early 1900s, when it wasn’t uncommon for a hip actress to be photographed in a pair of her sharpest shades.

Today, we’re still talking about the sunglasses that Audrey Hepburn — the original trendsetter — donned in the opening scene of 1961’s Breakfast at Tiffany’s. She emerges from the flagship store of the legendary luxury house referenced in the film’s title in a pair of glamorous dark tortoiseshell frames designed by London eyewear firm Oliver Goldsmith Sunglasses. The brand was a keeper for Hepburn — in 1967, she famously wore a pair of Goldsmith’s Yuhu wraparound frames in the poster for Stanley Donen’s film Two for the Road.

Indeed, celebrities have long held sway in the sunglasses realm — perhaps you’ve opted for vintage Ray-Ban sunglasses because you’re enamored with Marilyn Monroe’s celebrated Wayfarers or you’ve taken to classic Aviators because actor Jon Hamm wore them in the nostalgic TV smash hit Mad Men. Good frames are a surefire way to take your style to the next level.

When shopping for the right pair of sunglasses, consider the color and shape of the frames (as well as the shape of your face), how dark or light the lenses are — or tint, if you’re leaning toward a chic gradient lens. Take your time, spring for more than one pair because different moods call for different shades and, while you’re at it, make sure you know how to spot a pair of fake Ray-Ban sunglasses before you make that purchase.

On 1stDibs, our collection of vintage designer sunglasses features classics from Gucci, Cartier, Chanel and other brands as well as a wide range that can be sorted by color — find sleek black sunglasses, brown pairs and a whole lot of other eye-catching options, whether it’s sunny outside or not.

Questions About Balenciaga
  • 1stDibs ExpertApril 5, 2022
No, not all Balenciaga bags come with a mirror, but the majority do. The mirror is typically attached to the handle and stored inside the external pocket. The mirror should already be attached and not separately wrapped. Shop a collection of authentic Balenciaga purses from some of the world’s top boutiques on 1stDibs.

Yes, new Balenciaga handbags come with a storage bag and a box. Part of the fun of getting a new Balenciaga bag is unboxing it for the very first time. Many owners of Balenciaga bags and other luxury handbags like to keep their boxes for added protection when storing. To clean your Balenciaga handbag you’ll want to start by wiping it down with a soft flannel cloth. Test a small amount of leather cleaner in an inconspicuous spot to make sure it doesn’t harm or discolor the leather. If everything looks good, begin to wipe the cleaner over all the leather in a small, circular motion. Then buff the bag with a soft dry cloth and allow it to dry for several hours, keeping it out of direct sunlight. You may opt to use a conditioning cream to finish the process, but only if the care instructions for your bag recommend this. Always check with the care instructions for specific information. Shop a collection of authentic Balenciaga purses from some of the world’s top boutiques on 1stDibs.

To polish your Balenciaga leather bag, looking top-notch with these easy tips. Since Balenciaga bags are one of the most-copied, they’re difficult to authenticate, so it’s best to take the bag to an appraiser. A tell-tale sign a bag is fake is mismatched style numbers on the front and back tags — these should match if the bag is real. Additionally, an authentic bag will feature the Lampo logo with sleek, not thick, lines. On 1stDibs, shop expertly authenticated Balenciaga handbags from top sellers around the world.
  • 1stDibs ExpertApril 5, 2022
To tell if a Balenciaga shirt is real, check the stitching throughout to make sure it’s flawless and symmetrical. Fake Balenciaga items are usually made with less care and it can show in the stitching. One quick way to check if a Balenciaga shirt or other garment is real is to look at the care tag. The legitimate Balenciaga items carry their quality through the tag and will appear with crisp letters that are evenly spaced. Always purchase Balenciaga garments from a reputable seller to ensure authenticity. Shop a large collection of Balenciaga items from some of the world’s top sellers on 1stDibs.

These shoes are reported to be extremely comfortable with a durable sole and a snug sock-like upper that cradles the foot. When first released, pop culture celebrities quickly praised the shoe, adding to its mass appeal and prompting stores to sell out within days, if not hours. Balenciaga agneau refers to the type of leather this brand uses. Typically it uses Balenciaga cheve, which is goatskin, or it uses agneau, which is lambskin. The cheve line was discontinued in 2008 because the softer agneau was introduced in 2007, and the agneau continues to be what is used for the majority of Balenciaga’s bags. In 2013, the cheve leather was brought back for select bags and may still crop up once in a while, but it isn’t common.
