Fendi for sale on 1stDibs

Like other major European luxury fashion houses, Fendi started small. Adele Casagrande was an Italian creative who loved fashion and sold leather and fur accessories from a tiny workshop she opened in Rome in 1918. However, after marrying Edoardo Fendi in 1925, her business model was altered dramatically. Together, the couple changed the boutique’s name to Fendi and moved into a bigger storefront, which quickly became the favorite shop of women all over Italy’s capital city for furs and leathers, such as handbags, coats and accessories.

As time moved on for Adele and Edoardo, the couple began to distribute more responsibility to their five daughters, who assumed management of the company during the 1950s. Fendi’s audience broadened and its profitability has soared over the years, owing to the brand’s fresh perspective on fashion world happenings and innovative sensibility. The maison also has a distinctive relationship with old-world Italian craftsmanship. The Selleria bags were the work of master saddlers in Rome, and Fendi partnered with lace artisans in southern Italy as well as craftsmen in the east trained in the intrecciato (intertwined) technique (an idea that Adele introduced during the 1940s), which, in Fendi’s case, sees an interwoven leather fabric integrated in the creation of its handbags, countering leather’s traditional rigidity with a bag that is soft, versatile and fitted with an alluring slouchy curve.

It wasn’t until 1965, however, when a young German designer named Karl Lagerfeld took the creative helm that Fendi became a world-renowned fashion house. In fact, Lagerfeld, who produced four to five collections yearly for the brand, is credited with creating Fendi’s instantly recognizable double-F logo (which stands for “Fun Furs”) in “less than five seconds.” Until Lagerfeld started designing for the brand, fur was a material mostly associated with heavy coats that few people actually wore. Lagerfeld reimagined fur in creative ways, using it as an accent on purses, cuffs on dress sleeves and collars on wool coats.

Over the ensuing years, Fendi has broken into the home-goods market with Fendi Casa and has become synonymous with luxury fashion, producing such pieces as the iconic Baguette, which was rendered ever popular on the television series Sex and the City. In fact, an entire episode during the third season was dedicated to the “original It bag,” a slim accessory tapered in a manner that recalls its namesake, designed in 1997 by Adele and Edoardo’s granddaughter Silvia Venturini Fendi, who was named creative director of accessories three years earlier.

Perhaps just as well known as its vintage Baguette handbags and creative use of fur is the brand’s devotion to its Italian roots. In 2013, Fendi donated more than 2 million euros to restore Rome’s Trevi Fountain, and when it was reopened to visitors, Fendi hosted its Autumn/Winter 2017 show on top of the landmark.

Fendi was a family-controlled brand until 1999 and is now owned by LVMH. In late 2020, British fashion designer Kim Jones was named the house’s artistic director for womens wear.

Finding the Right clothing for You

From museum-worthy vintage Oscar de la Renta evening dresses and jackets to audacious T-shirts and trousers from provocative punk designer Vivienne Westwood, one thing is abundantly clear: If the clothing available on 1stDibs could talk, it would certainly make a statement.

For fashion lovers, the 1990s have become associated with styles adopted by today’s supermodels and influencers — think Galliano and Cavalli — but maybe ‘80s accessories are among your (guilty?) pleasures. Playful, boldly colored coats and outerwear from Moschino and other titans of the era can take a simpler ensemble to the next level, while chic and practical suits from the likes of Christian Dior and Chanel remain classic for haute couture advocates and beyond. By exploring the vast array of vintage collections on these pages, you can transform your closet into a retreat that is as retro as it is royal.

Velvet cocktail dresses and silk evening gowns designed by French-born American couturiere Pauline Trigère — who dressed Wallis Simpson, the Duchess of Windsor — have proven timeless since their mid-century debut, while an overcoat by Alexander McQueen is the perfect finishing touch. In fact, an emerald one stays in rotation for Kate Middleton, Duchess of Cambridge.

Those seeking modern high-fashion brands are also in luck. Turn your day-to-day into a runway with selections from Dolce & Gabbana, Yves Saint Laurent and Versace or complete that fresh look with stunning footwear classics from the likes of Gucci and Christian Louboutin. The future — and glamorous past — of fashion is yours for the wearing.

Build your collection of covetable and iconic vintage garments by shopping on 1stDibs. No matter where you roam, our diverse apparel and accessories will keep you covered in the hottest styles and comfiest black hoodie imaginable.

Questions About Fendi
  • 1stDibs ExpertMarch 22, 2022
How to clean Fendi Monster sneakers depends on whether you have leather or suede shoes. Use a cleaning product formulated specifically for the material. Never use water to clean suede, as the moisture may cause spots. Refer to the care instructions included with the shoes for best results. On 1stDibs, find a range of Fendi sneakers.
  • 1stDibs ExpertMarch 22, 2022
To authenticate Fendi bags produced after 2004, look for the holographic tag that bears the serial number. Counterfeiters usually cannot fully reproduce the reflective quality of these tags. For bags made before 2004, check the inside for the serial number. It will appear engraved on a metal plate or embossed onto the leather. On 1stDibs, shop a collection of expertly vetted Fendi bags.
  • 1stDibs ExpertMarch 22, 2022
How to clean a Fendi bag depends on the bag type and material. For best results, follow the care instructions provided with the accessory. Generally, use a soft, dry cloth to wipe surface debris off of any Fendi bag. Only use cleaning products approved for your handbag's material, such as a leather or suede cleaner. On 1stDibs, find a variety of Fendi bags.
  • 1stDibs ExpertMarch 22, 2022
To authenticate Fendi sunglasses, begin by studying any nose pads included in the design. Real Fendi sunglasses show an engraving of the double-F logo on the posts that support the pads. Normally, Fendi prints their name in capital letters beside the words "made in Italy" and the CE logo on the right temple. On 1stDibs, shop a range of expertly vetted Fendi sunglasses.
  • 1stDibs ExpertMarch 22, 2022

To authenticate a Fendi belt, first check that the serial number tag is stamped behind the belt, near the buckle. If there’s no number, or if the tagged area is a different color than the rest of the belt, you’re looking at a fake. As with other luxury leather goods, always look for excellent craftsmanship. A genuine Fendi belt should be built to last, so a belt that has uneven stitching or looks excessively worn and damaged is probably not authentic. 1stDibs partners with only top-vetted sellers to offer authentic pieces that come with a buyer protection guarantee. Shop a collection of expertly-vetted Fendi shoes on 1stDibs.
  • 1stDibs ExpertMarch 22, 2022

Whether or not Fendi shoes are comfortable is a matter of personal perception. However, the brand does add features to their shoes to help enhance the fit. An example is the stretchy elastic heel strap found on the Colibri Pump. Shop a collection of Fendi shoes on 1stDibs.
  • 1stDibs ExpertMarch 22, 2022
Fendi makes bags out of a variety of materials. Many bags feature crocodile, lambskin or cowhide leathers. The brand also produces cotton, wool and other fabric bags. Fendi offers some bags in more than one material. Others feature a single material available in an array of colors. On 1stDibs, shop a selection of Fendi bags.

It’s important to purchase from a vetted seller or vendor to ensure authenticity. While Fendi has at times inspired knockoffs, 1stDibs partners with only top-vetted sellers to offer authentic pieces that come with a buyer protection guarantee.

Yes, Fendi belts typically have serial numbers. To find one, look behind the buckle. The number should appear as an engraving on the metal. Belts with the serial number printed on a fabric tag are likely inauthentic. On 1stDibs, find a range of expertly vetted Fendi belts.
