Questions About Old Military Watches
  • 1stDibs ExpertMarch 3, 2023
There are no specific criteria for what makes a military watch a military watch. However, people may call watches "military" if they resist damage due to shocks, are highly waterproof, accurate and easy to read in extreme environments. On 1stDibs, find a selection of military watches.
  • 1stDibs ExpertFebruary 13, 2023
There isn't one specific brand or model of watch that the military uses. Generally, members of the military wear watches that are durable, waterproof, shockproof and accurate in the field. Shop a variety of watches on 1stDibs.
  • 1stDibs ExpertApril 4, 2024
Yes, Omega has made military watches. In 1917, the British Royal Flying Corps designated Omega as an official supplier, and during World War II it became the principal watch supplier for the British forces and their allies. These commissions further strengthened Omega’s commitment to ensuring its products’ reliability under extreme conditions.

In 1948, Omega launched the versatile Seamaster. Developed as a dive watch, the Seamaster proved its durability at high altitudes and freezing temperatures, as well. While the Omega Seamaster is known as a dive watch, it wasn’t originally made for divers. Introduced in 1948, it was marketed as a dress watch for posh modern gentlemen and featured new waterproofing technology developed by the firm during World War II.

Thanks in part to its rugged reputation and Omega’s links to the British military, it became James Bond’s watch of choice in 1995, appearing in GoldenEye and every succeeding Bond movie; it returned in 2021’s No Time to Die. To commemorate the partnership, the firm created 007 editions of the Seamaster. Nevertheless, the most famous Omega by far is the Speedmaster, introduced in 1957. The first chronograph to display its tachymeter scale on the bezel instead of the dial for easier readability, it was quickly adopted by engineers and scientists.

Find vintage Omega watches on 1stDibs.
  • 1stDibs ExpertApril 5, 2022
Rolex made its mark on the world in 1910, and in the 100-plus years since, the Bienne, Switzerland-based brand has focused on making some of the highest quality watches in the world, with trademark chronometric precision. Find authentic vintage and new Rolex watches on 1stDibs.
  • 1stDibs ExpertDecember 4, 2023
Yes, old Rolex watches can be repaired. The Swiss luxury watchmaker will often restore timepieces for customers, and there are many authorized repair shops that specialize in Rolex restoration. Contact Rolex’s customer service to explore your options. Shop a large collection of Rolex watches from some of the world's top dealers on 1stDibs.
  • 1stDibs ExpertFebruary 13, 2023
The value of an old watch depends on a number of factors, including who made it and which style it is. Condition also has a major impact on how much a timepiece is worth. As a result, it's generally best to seek the opinion of an experienced jeweler or certified appraiser. On 1stDibs, find a large selection of watches.
  • 1stDibs ExpertFebruary 13, 2024
To tell how old your Gruen watch is, turn it over and examine the back of its case. Most timepieces feature two numbers positioned side by side or one above the other. The first, or top, number represents the caliber number, while the second, or bottom, number is the style number. Once you have the style number, you can cross-reference it with trusted online resources to determine its age, and learn more about your timepiece. On 1stDibs, shop a range of Gruen watches.
  • 1stDibs ExpertMay 5, 2023
Yes, many old watches are worth something. However, values vary greatly based on the maker, the style of the timepiece, how many watches like it were produced and the current level of demand for similar timepieces. Even among watches that generally do have value, the condition of the timepiece will impact the price. A certified appraiser can take a look at your watch and assign an estimated value to it. Shop a collection of watches on 1stDibs.
  • 1stDibs ExpertJune 15, 2023
Yes, some old Tudor watches are valuable and in demand among collectors. The value of a Tudor watch depends on its date, model and condition. Generally, timepieces that are still in working order are worth more than those that require repairs. You can work with a jeweler or consult a certified appraiser to ascertain the value of a specific Tudor watch. On 1stDibs, find a variety of Tudor watches.
  • 1stDibs ExpertApril 5, 2022
How old key-wind pocket watches are varies greatly. Watchmakers used key-wind mechanisms in pocket watches starting in the 16th century and continued the practice until the mid 19th century. You can find a collection of key-wind pocket watches on 1stDibs.
  • 1stDibs ExpertFebruary 22, 2021
Because Bulova isn't a luxury brand and they made millions of watches, the watches are frequently worth the gold's value that was used to produce them. Sometimes some of the vintage watches are worth more than their original value when resold.
  • 1stDibs ExpertApril 5, 2022
Hamilton's Railway Special pocket watch was launched in 1940 and remained in production for the next two decades. At the time, it was marketed as the most accurate railroad watch available. Shop a collection of vintage and contemporary Hamilton timepieces from some of the world's top sellers on 1stDibs.
