By Marie Laforey
Located in New York, NY
Marie Laforey is a self-taught artist based in New York, US who maintains a sustainable art practice using primarily organic material. Laforey enjoys the tactility of working with organic mediums and learning how to craft preserved moss, clay, feathers and other natural elements into beautiful abstract compositions. Primarily inspired by nature, repetition, patterns, texture and geometry are essential elements that are omnipresent in her works. About Lapis and Flos series: Laforey recent ceramic works are unique pieces that alter in patterns to give an illusion of movement and depth by using clay’s potential for building sculptural dimension. The repetitive use of a unique element, the circle is centered to her work. The circle has often been associated with the female and to Mother Earth. It has no beginning and no end, it is the whole, the essence of things. It symbolizes the ongoing energy found in nature. Laforey’s Lapis mural ceramic series...

American Surrealist pipes and playing cards spirit of Magritte abstract Montage
By Charles Green Shaw
Located in Norwich, GB
I love this extraordinary American surrealist piece - a collage/montage, an assembly of objects in a velvet-clad box/frame - for a number of reasons reasons. I love the fact that it depicts pipes, among the most iconic images of the surrealist movement, rooted in Magritte’s famous 1929 painting which depicts a pipe accompanied by the caption “Ceci n'est pas une pipe” (This is not a pipe). Marcel Duchamp loved using pipes...

"Kintsugi Moon Jar", ceramic sculpture, porcelain vase, gold blue brown, saggar
By Alison Brannen
Located in Toronto, Ontario
"Kintsugi Moon Jar" is a saggar-fired porcelain vessel by Alison Brannen. It measures 14" high by 14" wide. Inspired by her journeys sailing the Atlantic Ocean, Alison can’t get enough wind and fire! She creates dynamic patterns that ebb and flow along the surface of her beautiful organic vessels. Specifically, Kintsugi Moon Jar is hand-coiled porcelain, saggar and salt fired with Kintsugi (the gold lines). It was exhibited recently at the Gardiner Museum of Ceramic Art, Toronto, Canada. Characteristic of Alison's best work, the surface texture and coloration suggest a world of water and terrain, as well as a shoreline of bracken, seaweed and eddies of water. There's a natural harmony in the chaos, offering us both painterly and tactile pleasures. From Alison Brannen – "I fell in love with clay 20 years ago and prefer a painterly, experimental approach when building and glazing my work. I alter the form and use colored slips to build the surface. My firing process can be hard on the work as I tumble stack bisque-fired pieces in a saggar chamber and fire to 1800’F. I often use Kintsugi gold repair to highlight imperfections and repair cracks which I view as desirable and natural. I saggar fire my pieces outdoors in a small Raku kiln with combustibles, salt and oxides. This mixture creates a mineral rich atmosphere: copper reds and cobalt blues invade the surface of each highly burnished piece. The color on the pot is actually created by fire. I am inspired by Anasazi, Pueblo and preColumbian pottery...

"Desert Orchid", ceramic sculpture, porcelain vase, earth, saggar fire, kintsugi
By Alison Brannen
Located in Toronto, Ontario
"Desert Orchid" is a saggar-fired porcelain vase by Alison Brannen. It measures 14" high by 9" wide. Inspired by her journeys sailing the Atlantic Ocean, Alison can’t get enough wind and fire! She creates dynamic patterns that ebb and flow along the surface of her beautiful organic vessels. Specifically, Desert Orchid is saggar and salt fired porcelain with terra sigillata. The open vase of ochre with cobalt suggest terrain and mineral earth in complex but elegant arrangements, both interior and exterior. From Alison Brannen – "I fell in love with clay 20 years ago and prefer a painterly, experimental approach when building and glazing my work.
