He first studied with his father Paul and the sculptor Bernard Griffoul-Dorval. His first exhibited sculpture was already a portrait of a dog ("Druid", a dog of the Prince Imperial, in 1860). But Jules Bertrand Gélibert is above all well known today as a painter of hunting scenes and hunting dogs. His workshop was in Montmartre in Paris, 17 boulevard Pigalle. In 1861, he was given an honorable mention at the Salon des Artistes Français. In 1865 he lived in Clamart and studied with Louis-Godefroy Janin, the great painter specializing in dogs. We know that he also painted with his brother and when Jules was painting animals, Gaston was painting landscapes.
