Ángel Botello (June 20, 1913 - November 11, 1986) was a Spanish-Puerto Rican painter, sculptor, and graphic artist. He was dubbed "The Caribbean Gauguin" for his bold colors and depictions of island life. Botello is considered one of the greatest Latin American post-modern artists, and recognition and demand for his artwork continue to grow today, fetching unprecedented auction prices. Ángel Botello was never attached to any particular artistic school or movement and was a protean artist: he developed his artistic style. Botello was a versatile and many-sided artist who worked in all creative media at his reach: oil paintings, drawing, printmaking, bronze sculptures, wood carving, photography, and mosaics.(Biography provided by Myriam Nader Gallery, NY)

Artist Biography -
Kevans’ paintings reflect her interests in power, manipulation and the role of the individual in inherited belief systems. She looks at alternative histories and how they relate to current issues and creates what she describes as ‘anti-portraits’ that may or may not be based on real documentation. She believes that, as her work is concept driven, sometimes the actual similarity to the person depicted in the work is irrelevant. This can be seen in her 'Boys' series which is not about portraying dictators as they really looked as children but rather about the notion of the ‘innocent child’ which has influenced images of children in art...

The size with the original artist-made frame is H 25.5" x W 21.5" x D 3.75".
The size of the oil painting on masonite is H 17.5" x W 14".
It is signed lower left - "Botello".
The frame and painting are in good condition.
The provenance is Private Collection, Austria. A recent acquisition for our gallery.
Painter and sculptor, Angel Botello was born in 1913 in the small town of Cangas de Morrazo in Galicia, Spain. He moved to Bordeaux, France with his family in the 20's and lived there until 1935. While in France, Botello studied during four years at the School of Fine Arts where he graduated with honor. Then, he moved to Spain where he applied and was accepted at the School of Art of the San Fernando Academy.
The civil war started which made him leave his studies and join the army as a cartographer. He eventually returned to France to meet with his family that was in a refugee camp. They decided to leave Europe and move to the Dominican Republic where he was warmly received.
