Carlos Carnero Paintings
1922-1980
Carlos Carnero, a native of Montevideo, emigrated to Paris and joined Fernand Léger's studio workshop at the end of the 1940s. Located on the Boulevard de Clichy, the workshop-school had around 75 students. In the workshop, Carlos Carnero, was noted for his talent and involvement. In addition to providing an art education, Léger entrusted the task of secretariat of the workshop to Carlos, which involved movements of the stocks, inventory paintings and material organization of exhibitions. The head of the workshop, Nadia Khodasievich, was a brilliant painter and the first pupil of Malevich, then of Leger in the mid-1920s. She became the assistant, then the mistress, and, then, his wife, in 1952.

In the workshop, Carlos Carnero, soon nicknamed
"Carlos" is noted for his talent and involvement. In addition to art education, the couple Léger entrusts the task of the secretariat of the workshop: movements of the stocks, inventory paintings, material organization of exhibitions. After the death of Léger in 1955, Carlos becomes very close to Nadia, rigorous in the construction of the posterity of the master. With his new companion Georges Bauquier, they found, on their own funds, the museum Fernand Léger de Biot - Carnero gives his assistance.
Carnero's style is very close to that of his master, filled with joy and colorful dynamism. At the beginning of the 50's, he tried the cubisante figuration of the portraits of Picasso then adopts the abstract balances between lines, shapes and colors of Léger.

This portrait has a naïve and gentle charm to it. To my eye it looks like a woman but it could equally be any gender or age. Perhaps this is the beauty of Turner Durrant's abstraction. The materiality is more distinct when you see the piece in the flesh. There is something endearing about being able to see the edges of the paper, torn almost in haste as if the artist just had to get the image down. Maybe it was painted on the spot or an image from the artist's imagination. Whichever, the use of minimal line and a reduced palette adds to the simplicity and thus free nature of the painting.

Roy Turner Durrant (1925 - 1998)
A Modern British artist, Roy Turner Durrant was born in Suffolk, England in 1925. His career was long and distinguished, culminating with work in major public galleries in the UK and internationally.
After the war he secured a place at Camberwell College of Arts where he was taught by amongst others by Edward Ardizzone Michael Rothenstein Keith Vaughan and John Buckland Wright and was a contemporary of Theodore Mendez. Whilst at Camberwell he was already exhibiting his paintings in London galleries. His work moved from early landscape and architectural interest to abstraction but with a great variety of style and technique.
A member of the New English Art Club, from the late 1940s he exhibited regularly at the Royal Academy and in numerous commercial galleries in London. From the 1950s, his early figurative style began to change, becoming more abstract.
He said of his own work in 1951 that his abstract imagery were 'by-products of an inquisition primarily concerned not with what the eye sees but with what the intellect and emotion experience’.
In 1963 he moved to Cambridge to take up the post of Art Gallery Manager at Heffers at the time a well known local artists' materials and book sellers...

Fine original French drawing by the important and fascinating painter, Carlos Carnero (1922-1980). The painting has excellent provenance, having come from the artists estate sale in Paris. The artists close connection to one of the 20th centuries most important artists, Fernand Leger is of important significance, with his own work being widely collected and appreciated.
The artist:
Carlos Carnero (1922-1980), a native of Montevideo, emigrates to Paris and joins Fernand Léger's studio workshop at the end of the 1940s. Located on the Boulevard de Clichy, the workshop-school has some seventy-five students. At the end of his life, Léger elaborates a protest against Cubism advocates the return to the human figure. The head of the workshop, Nadia Khodasievich, brilliant painter, first pupil of Malevich, then of Leger in the mid-1920s, became the assistant thenthe mistress of this one and the wife in 1952. In the workshop, Carlos Carnero, soon nicknamed
"Carlos" is noted for his talent and involvement. In addition to art education, the couple Léger entrusts the task of the secretariat of the workshop: movements of the stocks, inventory paintings, material organization of exhibitions. After the death of Léger in 1955, Carlos becomes very close to Nadia, rigorous in the construction of the posterity of the master. With his new companion Georges Bauquier, they found, on their own funds, the museum Fernand Léger de Biot - Carnero gives his assistance.
Carnero's style is very close to that of his master, filled with joy and colorful dynamism. At the beginning of the 50's, he tried the cubisante figuration of the portraits of Picasso then adopts the abstract balances between lines, shapes and colors of Léger.
