Charles Harry Eaton Art

American
Inspired by the Barbizon style of painting and devoted to the Detroit landscape for much of his career, Charles Harry Eaton was largely a self-taught artist who determinedly earned himself a national reputation. Raised in Akron, Ohio, Eaton moved to Detroit in 1867 and studied briefly under John Mix Stanley. The years of 1878 to 1880 found him momentarily in Holly, Michigan, followed by two years in Chicago, and nearly ten years in New York City. During the 1890s, the artist finally settled in Leonia, New Jersey, where he remained for the rest of his career. Eaton received prizes—including gold medals—from the Boston Art Club (1884-1899), the American Water Color Society (1898), the Philadelphia Art Club (1900) and the Pan-American Exposition (1901, posthumously). He was a member of the Salmagundi Club, the Boston Art Club, the Detroit Art Association and the American Water Color Society, and an Associate Member of the National Academy.

Canyon Country by Lu Haskew Pastel 16x20" image size Landscape view of the Grand Canyon ABOUT THE ARTIST: Lu Haskew 1921-2009 "Life is good to me. Being able to go to my studio five days weekly and paint for several hours, living in a supportive community, having family and friends who encourage me--all have contributed to helping me become an artist. Being fortunate to study with some of the artists I admire has kept me painting from the garden, people and my favorite things. With the support of galleries, teaching and doing demos, how could I do anything else? My goal is to try to be the best I can be by always being a student, looking for new ideas and stretching my horizons." Upon retirement from a 33-year teaching career, Lu rented a studio in Loveland and began concentrating on her oil and watercolor painting. Learning from artists she had followed and admired throughout the years her painting became a full time career. Since 1992, she has studied with renowned painters Richard Schmid, Clyde Aspevig, Joyce Pike, and others at the Scottsdale Art...

View of the Ovo Castle in the Moonlight, a 19th century Neapolitan gouache
Located in PARIS, FR
Neapolitan gouaches appeared in the eighteenth century when tourism in the Naples area was developing: the discoveries of Herculaneum and Pompeii made this city a mandatory stop on the Grand Tour, the journey made by wealthy Europeans to complete their education. Generally small in size for ease of transport and affordable in price, these gouaches were the ideal travel souvenir that these tourists of the early days were bringing back to capture the idyllic landscapes they had discovered during their journey and to share them with family and friends upon their return at home. The Bay of Naples and the eruptions of Vesuvius are the favourite themes of these views. Here we have a view of the Ovo Castle, which was rebuilt on the island of Partenope, in the middle of the Bay of Naples and about a hundred metres from the shore by the Normans in the 12th century on antique ruins...

View of Ariccia, a preparatory drawing by Achille Bénouville (1815 - 1891)
Located in PARIS, FR
This very modern drawing presents a view of Ariccia, a small town 25 kilometres south-east of Rome. The Palazzo Chigi (in which the film-maker Luchino Visconti would film a large part of The Leopard a century later) and the adjoining church are seen from the bottom of the ravine that surrounds the town. This drawing is a moving testimony to the attraction of the city for artists of the Romantic period, who established in Ariccia a vivid artists' colony. 1. Achille Bénouville...
