Bas van Pelt Set of Six Dining Chairs for My Home, The Netherlands, 1930s
By Bas Van Pelt
Located in Utrecht, NL
These rare dining chairs from Dutch designer, Bas van Pelt, are testimonies to the less talked about, but brilliant era of early Dutch modernism. Van Pelt’s designs were only produced when an order was placed, therefore the numbers of the models are very small. The construction of these rare 1930s dining chairs is simple at its core, but thanks to the details, it is a playful representation of early Dutch modernism. While Bas Van Pelt's creative work was primarily influenced by the 1920s’ straight lines dominated by The Hague School, this set of chairs is the result of his more mature design era, which was primarily dominated by natural materials and more curvature. These handcrafted chairs have a solid oak frame and a distinctive backrest comprised of oak spindles. While made of solid oak, the design has an open feel to it thanks to the vertical and open spaces on the back and the structure of the legs. The slightly curved line of the backrest’s top nicely contrast with the straight lines of the frame, and show wonderful craftsmanship. The upholstered seat adds textural interest, complementing the oak’s beautiful colour. Thanks to the well-chosen proportions and the expert craftsmanship, these chairs are top-notch both visually and technically. Placed next to each other, their appearance is enhanced even further. Bas van Pelt’s progressive designs were, in many ways, ahead of his era. The Dordrecht-born designer’s furniture models are quite rare, a few are preserved in the Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam for Modern Art, Contemporary Art, and Design. Condition: In good vintage condition. Wear consistent with age and use. Some minor scratches on the wood. The seats have been reupholstered recently in a premium fabric. Each of our items can be re-upholstered by our in-house atelier in a fabric of choice. Please reach out for more information. Dimensions: 19.68 in W x 21.65 in D x 37.79 in H; Seat height 18.89 in 50 cm W x 55 cm D x 96 cm H; Seat height 48 cm About the Designer: Bas Van Pelt (1900 Dordrecht (NL) - 1945 Sandbostel (DE)) was a well-known Dutch interior and furniture designer, known for the clarity and quality of his designs. His works created in the 1930s and 1940s are regarded for their progressive design and quality. While he is most well-known for his chair designs, van Pelt was also active as an interior designer. He also designed fabrics for window...

Upholstered Armchair by Bas Van Pelt for My Home, The Netherlands 1940s
By Bas Van Pelt
Located in Utrecht, NL
This elegant armchair by Dutch designer, Bas Van Pelt is a classically luxe model with a level of craftsmanship that’s immediately visible to any eye. The construction of this rare 1940s design is simple at its core, but thanks to the details, it is a unique representation of early Dutch modernism. While Bas Van Pelt's creative work was primarily influenced by the 1920s straight lines dominated by The Hague School, this armchair is the result of his more mature design era, which was primarily dominated by natural materials and more curvature. While made of solid wood, this armchair has an open feel to it thanks to the airy arrangement of the arms and legs. The curved lines of the armrests are beautifully crafted and follow the raised seat’s angle. The curves nicely contrast with the straight lines of the frame, keeping it from appearing too strict. Apart from the expert woodwork, the upholstered seat and back stand out as well. The light bouclé fabric is tightly fitted around the frame, and the seat’s thick shape is an especially pleasing element that offers plenty of comfort both figuratively and literally. The overreaching backs further enhance the back’s widening shape and thus allow the individual loops of the yarn to stand out. The block legs blend seamlessly into the back and form a gentle angle. Thanks to the well-chosen proportions and the luxurious upholstery, this armchair provides great comfort. This model can be easily used as an accent chair thanks to its characteristic details, but can also complement a wide variety of interior styles with it refined and elegant style. The chair has been reupholstered recently in a premium bouclé fabric. Sculptural Lounge Chair by Bas Van Pelt 'Attr.', The Netherlands, ca 1950s
By Bas Van Pelt
Located in Utrecht, NL
This chair is full of exceptional features and details that make it a unique example of the creative overflow that defined mid-century modernism in Europe. The sculptural design is paired with the organicity of the material and various forms. While the design is no short of exceptional solutions, they are also in service of functionality and comfort. This is a chair of extreme comfort, with multiple joinery and construction techniques. It is a little lower than the standard lounge chair, and that is exactly what provides great ergonomics and aesthetics. The seat and back form an obtuse angle which assures the perfect lounging position. The removable cushions upholstered in brown cow hide add even more comfort, while the fabric’s texture stands out nicely against the smooth wooden surfaces. The flowing structure displays beautifully curved lines and rounded edges that are broken by the straight wooden slats on the back. The perfect balance between the fluid and straight lines is typical of Bas van Pelt’s seating designs. The subtle swirl carvings in the front are playful details that further show off the high level of design and craftsmanship. While the second half of the 20th century saw the takeover of mass production and many - now iconic - futuristic designs, this chair preserves the value and beauty of master craftsmanship and exquisite materials. Condition: In good vintage condition. Wear consistent with age and use. The chair’s cushions have been reupholstered recently in premium cow hide. Each of our items can be re-upholstered by our in-house atelier in a fabric of choice. Please reach out for more information.
