Emma Fordyce MacRae Art

American, 1887-1974
Philadelphia Ten Woman Artist, Emma Fordyce Macrae grew up in New York City where she attended the Art Students League (1911-13) and (1915-18). She had studios in New York City and Gloucester, Massachusetts where she summered. In 1937 she began exhibiting with the Philadelphia Ten Women Painters. She was also the only Philadelphia Ten member to attain full membership in the National Academy of Design in New York. She rarely sold her work due to her wealth and in 1983 Richard York Gallery held an exhibit of 30 of her works. Her paintings combine floral arrangements with a patterned, often figural, background in a fresco style that she developed after visiting the Roman wall paintings at Pompeii and Herculaneum. She never varnished her work as to maintain the frescoed appearance.

Max Savy Oil on canvas painting depicting a village scene with winemakers in a vineyard by artist Max Savy (French, b. 1918). Signed in the lower right. Frame measures 24.5 inches x 28 inches. canvas is 18 X 22 inches., Perfect for a wine cellar or cave. Max Savy (French, 1918-2010) painted scenes of everyday life in the French Corbieres region, which garnered much success during his life. Though the artist remained silent about his early life, it's known his father instilled in him a belief in the humanist socialism philosophy of French Socialist Party leader, Jean Jaures. In 1938, at age 20, he moved to Carcassonne to attend school. There, he married and settled into a teaching position, joining the French Resistance during World War II and earning the Cross of the Combatant. After the war, he created the work for which he is most admired. Max Savy paintings are part of France's heritage collection, and the artist became a knight of the National Order of Merit in 1973. Max Savy's paintings and artworks include scenes of peasants in the fields. Max Savy was active/lived in France. Max Savy is known for folk art style painting of village architecture, vintners, figures in landscape, wine makers, marine scenes. His work is similar in style to the naive, folk art paintings of Michel Delacroix and Fanch Ledan. This is quite similar to a work I had titled "Les Vignes Aux Gitans" (the gypsy grape vines) So i assume this is also a vineyard painting...

Japan Japanese Garden by French naive outsider folk art primitive artist, 1975
Located in Norwich, GB
A perfect painting for lovers of Japan and those of primitive/naive outside art. It is a work by an internatoanlly noted extraordinary artist with an extraordinary life. Maurice LOIRAND (1922-2008) is born into a working class family in Brittany, near the Atlantic coast coast in France. He starts working as a skilled labourer in the shipyards aged 15. Aged 20, when the Nazis start to occupy the country, he joins the Resistance movement, where he meets and befriends thinkers, painters and poets. He is thus introduced to an artistic and intellectual universe far removed from the world of his origins. Loirand finds himself drawn to art, and soon dedicates all his free time to learn how to paint. Completely self taught, he soon begins to exhibit his pictures alongside high level artists. He moves to Paris in the 1950s, and - although still working as a technician - paints all night. He finally becomes a full time artist in 1968. International travel and a multitude of exhibitions follow. He exhibits in Brazil, Argentina, and with Jean Tiroche Gallery in New York, among others. His work is now shown alongside works by Leger, Matisse and Picasso. The Collector's Guild New York Ltd commissions Maurice Loirand for several works of lithographic art. Loirand discovers Japan in the early 1970s, and decides to stay for 18 years. He marries Kazué SHIMOTORI, a Japanese poet...

French Outsider Art Brut Mixed Media Zinc Assemblage Sculpture Collage Painting
Located in Surfside, FL
Mixed media assemblage sculpture/painting. Hand signed and dated recto and verso. Provenance: Galerie Alphonse Chave, bears their label verso Michel, Fernand (1913-1999) Born in 1913 in Neuviller-lès-Badonviller in the Vosges, Fernand Michel began working at the age of twelve in a Landes pottery factory. When his mother died, he went to live in Alsace with an aunt and became an art bookbinder. A lover of poetry, he bonded with Jean Vodaine, Jean Dubuffet and Alphonse Chave (Alphonse Chave was an art lover, dealer and collector. On November 15, 1947 in Vence, under the name Les Mages, he opened a contemporary art gallery which would also become a high place of art brut and unique art . The gallery took its final name - Galerie Alphonse Chave - in 1960. He exhibited Dado, Philippe Dereux, Jean Dubuffet, Max Ernst, Henri michaux, Louis Pons, Man Ray, Dorothea Tanning, Zao Wou-ki as well as other creators.) Around 1962, he began carving zinc after finding a plaque in a landfill. From this period, he made numerous assemblies, most often of large dimensions, which he called "zinc works" where buxom bathers, Venus callipyges, nuns and holy nitouches rub shoulders. The corroded and battered material over the years, used as is, gives his works a certain harshness, however softened by more ornamental pieces. Fernand Michel lived in Montpellier. He died in 1999. His work is present in the collection of La Fabuloserie in Dicy. Publications Revue "Création Franche" N ° 16, November 1998 Catalog "Donation Claude Massé", March 1999 Catalog "Collection Création Franche - 1989-2010", September 2010 Revue "Création Franche" N ° 38, June 2013 Franche Creation, Special Issue N ° 2, April 2015 His son Patrick Michel's collection is housed in Montpellier in the Musee d’arts brut, singulier and autres. "I used to accompany my father to his exhibitions since he was exhibited every year at the Galerie Chave in Vence. I still remember that Alphonse Chave once offered me a little toy (a car!) from his shop. I therefore met the artists Philippe Dereux, Armand Avril, François Ozenda, Pascal Verbena, Louis Pons, Jean Vodaine, Henri Comby, Fred Deux and Eugène Gabritschevsky- I took the decision to create the museum in order to save (and protect) my father’s work- my father was often classified under the ‘Art Brut’ label but in fact he belonged to the ‘Singular Art’ label... The term Art Brut exists since Jean Dubuffet gave it to us in 1945, covering self-taught and marginalised artists..The terms Outsider Art and Art Brut are fine with me- I place Nek Chand...
