Tout est ici savamment orchestré. Parfaitement centrée, la composition se construit selon les règles de la perspective où les lignes de fuite, l’alignement des maisons, à gauche, la frondaison et l’ombre des arbres, à droite, convergent vers la scène centrale : une foire aux bestiaux. Ménageant au sujet un espace privilégié, Eugène Boudin le place à distance de notre regard, lui offrant un premier plan bien dégagé. Bovins et personnages se concentrent dans une frise qui constitue la ligne d’horizon. A gauche, les vaches sont sagement alignées, entourées d’hommes qui négocient, tandis qu’à droite des groupes de femmes conversent, en un groupe compact. On reconnait leurs présences aux taches blanches de leurs coiffes qui parsèment la scène. Car ici la touche du peintre se fait virevoltante, précise mais légère.
