DeVilbiss Purfume Art Deco Poster by George Petty for the A.C. Schultz Company
Located in New York, NY
This beautiful Art Deco poster was realized by the esteemed American Artist George Petty for the A.C. Schultz Company in 1926. The work is an advertisement for DeVilbiss Perfume, which depicts a "Petty Girl" (as they came to be known) in the center of the composition floating in a pentagonal black color block. With short cropped silvery white hair and red lipstick, the female figure in center (suggestive of a stylized flapper) squeezes the atomizer of her perfume bottle misting herself in fragrance. Skyscraper style geometric forms suggesting elaborately faceted gemstones- in hues of rose, lavender, orange sapphire and yellow diamond- explode around her, suggesting the stage design for the set of the iconic film "Metropolis". The top of the composition features a bronze color block reading "DeVilbiss Perfume sprays" and in scrolling Deco lettering text reads “A drop of perfume bursting into myriad atoms of fragrance makes the use of perfume an added delight” near the bottom of the piece. Additionally, there is a solid black color block with crystalline black forms emanating outwards at the base of the composition, as well as a geometric abstract form on the right side of the piece imbuing it with a distinctly modernist inflection. With its quintessentially Art Deco sensibility, this piece is sure to delight discerning collectors of the period as well as those with a distinct appreciation for unusual (and stunning) fine art pieces. its vibrant palate and clean modernist lines make this piece a winning addition to any style of interior from classic Deco to contemporary. The piece comes presented in a custom gallery frame and is in excellent vintage condition. George Petty was an American illustrator known for his series of pin-ups known as "Petty Girls" which he created for Esquire magazine. The Petty Girl were coquettish women whose legs were elongated to create idealized female forms. They were featured on magazine centerfolds, billboards, and calendars for companies such as Ridgid Tools. Born George Brown Petty IV on April 27, 1894 in Abbeville, LA, Petty received his formal training at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago under Ruth Van Sickle Ford...

Tom Sawyer Detective by Mark Twain: 19th C. Framed Colored Poster
By Edward Penfield
Located in Alamo, CA
This lithographic colored advertising poster entitled "Tom Sawyer Detective, A New Story by Mark Twain" was created by Edward Penfield in 1897 for Harper & Brothers. The artist's signature appears in the plate in the lower left. The poster depicts a man in a long black bathing suit sitting with his knees up, aimlessly smoking a cigarette, but looking out of the corner of his eyes at a woman in a olive green dress and tan blouse and a black hat, who sits to his left with her head propped in her left hand and a bored or concerned look on her face. The look on the faces of the couple creates an air of mystery. The title of the book is printed in red in the upper left and the issue "Harper's August" in bold letters in the lower poster. The poster promotes a new book by Mark Twain that was published initially in two issues of Harper's Monthly and also in book form by Harper & Brothers in 1896. It is a sequel to "The Adventures of Tom Sawyer", published in 1876, "The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn", published in 1884, and "Tom Sawyer Abroad", also published in 1894. The plot of the book involves Tom Sawyer attempting to solve a mysterious murder. The story is told using the first-person narrative voice of his friend Huck Finn...

Egyptian Revival Lithograph
By Barbara Trupp
Located in Surfside, FL
(20th century) Theban Archaeopteryx Lithographica lithograph edition of 15 signed Barbara Trupp was born in Nebraska and spent her childhood in Montana. She studied at the Banff Centre School of Fine Arts in Alberta, Canada; the University of Puget Sound; and the University of Michigan. Theban Archeaopteryx Lithographica was printed at the Plucked Chicken Press in Evanston, Illinois. “The stone is the shape of the Rosetta Stone, unlocking language, [a] key to the past,” says Tripp. “Wouldn’t it be wonderful if you came across a stone, chipped at it, and revealed layer upon layer of visual history, images from sophisticated Egypt back to Paleozoic trilobites? “Lithography stones, quarried from the Jura Mountains of Bavaria, reach us from the Jurassic period of the Mesozoic, bearing fossils of the first birds. The bird fossil looked like it was doing an Egyptian dance, and that reminded me of the wall paintings of the House of Eternity in Thebes. ‘Paint the walls brightly, cheerfully, so that our souls will take the form of birds and fly,’ said Sennefer, the mayor of Thebes, in the tomb of his wife Meryet. “Fossils and archeological evidence provide proof that others existed before us, and allow us to see their thoughts. The past is with us. Like Archaeopteryx, Sennefer and Meryet still fly through eternity, though frozen in stone. Above them is the protective eye of Horus. Trilobites represent a breathtaking explosion of Cambrian life forms. Between Archaeopteryx and Egypt, I wanted mammals. Petroglyphs. Human marks. Because my right hand is the trained hand, I drew with my left, childlike. And I drew with a stick, dipped in asphaltum, and a ratty old brush...
