His mother, Nettie Hopkins, painted with watercolors recreationally and encouraged her son’s artistic interests. Though he shared his mother's love of art, Hopkins initially entered Ohio State University in 1896 to study electrical engineering. However, he soon left and briefly enrolled in the Columbus School of Art before going to the Art Academy of Cincinnati where he studied with Frank Duveneck. In 1900, Hopkins moved to New York City and worked as a medical textbook illustrator. Two years later he made the pilgrimage to the art center of the western world at the time, Paris, France. This elegant romanticist oil on burlap painting was realized by an unheralded master during the first part of the 20th century. Realized in tight, yet expressionistic brush strokes, the painting depicts a nude male figure in the foreground with his back turned towards the viewer. The man has one knee raised (perhaps grounded on a boulder) and an arm extended into the abstract background whose frenetic white stroked and blocks of mossy greens suggests a frothing river. He sits on a large river stone in a rich olive hue clutching a white towel in his right hand that supports the weight of his body. The figure's torqued position serves to highlight his muscular physique- whose ideal proportions recalls classical Greek sculpture. In the bottom right portion of the composition, there is an abstracted form in a sumptuous brick red that offers an understated pop of color that provides a dynamic contrast to the flesh tones, organic greens and flaxen hues of the figure's hair. Masterfully painted in a sophisticated palate, this painting would be a winning addition to any style of interior from traditional to contemporary, and is sure to be appreciated by connoisseurs of classical art and homoerotic art...

Apart from that, an album LES BAS-BLEUS was published in the same year (1844). ABOUT THIS PRINT. The Odéon theatre in Paris opened in 1797 and merged in 1946 with the Comédie Française. It reopened again in 1959 as an independent theatre under the name Théatre de France. This print shows an enthusiastic public applauding the author at the opening night. It seems that the female author had hidden behind a male name. The applause stops when the audience fully realizes the deception. This print can be seen in reference to George Sand's play "Cosima", which also had been rejected by the public under similar circumstances. BLUESTOCKINGS. The expression "Bluestocking” (or suffragette) dates back to 18th century England. At that time, angry young gentlemen of society met in London at the Montague House to discuss literary and political questions of their time. As a sign of protest against the establishment they wore blue wool-socks instead of black silk stockings. The expression was taken over by 19th century France to ridicule the new movement carried by Jeanne Désirée (1832), Cécile Fourmel, Suzanne Vailquin, and Claire Demar.
