Iliana Ortega Landscape Photography

American, b. 1981
Iliana Ortega was born in Mexico City, she studied at Yale, receiving her MFA degree in painting from that institution in 2011. Since then, she has lived on the Lower East Side in New York City, where she has a studio at El Clemente, a former public school now becoming a local art center. Her current work centers on iridescent watercolors using color-simulating light reflection. She also works with black-and-white photographs of seascapes and small towns occurring in places well-known and not so well-known--eastern Long Island and Iceland are among the sites of her images. Ortega also creates more technically complex images, in which photos are embellished and changed by pencil, paint, etc. Her imagery tends toward a deep romanticism, in which the play of light on darkened water and waves suggests a visionary reading of nature, one that looks to an apocalyptic scenario that overwhelms the artist’s audience with its drama and high visual contrast. Romanticism, generally speaking, does not fly high in the American art world; we are given to politics and social issues much more than infinite dreams. So it makes sense that Ortega comes from another culture, one in which an archaic, romantically weighted vision makes itself felt in her own work--even if that work shows no signs of particularity as Mexican culture or a Mexican artifact of time.

K-Narf Color Photo Graffiti, Adhesive Tape Altered Street Art Photograph Collage
By K-Narf
Located in Surfside, FL
K-narf, French (b. 1970) Collage photo artwork (Graffiti Vans) (2011) Tape-o-graph photography Signed lower right, numbered 1/5 16 x 12 7/8 inches K-NARF was born in 1970 in Saint-Etienne, France and now lives in Tokyo. K-NARF invented PHOTOGRAFFITI a contemporary way of making street photography that lead him to develop his singular Tape-o-Graphy technique. It involves the application of adhesive tape strips on developed photographs in order to manually process the photographs giving them a unique surface texture and extraordinary appearance. Open to influences from street art and video, he uses the medium of photography as a toy to create and play. Both conceptual and experimental, definitely non-conventional, his work documents, recycles and collects the visual anachronisms of a world in a perpetual mutation. Through the years, K-narf often got support from key figures of the art world such as Teruo Kurosaki (Idee, Tokyo), Rotraut and Daniel Klein-Moquay (Yves Klein Estate), Joel Meyerowitz (pioneer of contemporary color photography), Jacques Attali (French writer), Olivier Gay (Architect & Art collector) and Yoichi Nakamuta (curator & Art producer). He collaborates on regular basic with...

Lightning/Cotton Field, limited edition photograph, archival, signed
By Mitch Dobrowner
Located in Sante Fe, NM
Lightning/Cotton Field, limited edition photograph, archival, signed The adrenaline of seeing Mother Nature during some of her finest moments will be ingrained in me forever. It is a humbling experience - and I feel fortunate to have witnessed her power and grandeur over the past 12 years. My experiences are hard to describe in words During this last trip (July 2021) we traveled over 6400 miles in 10 days crossing through 10 different states - all in my quest/passion to photograph these storm systems. But this time the events of the last year made me more aware, opened my eyes wider, and had a different effect on me. The effects of Climate Change have become obvious. The current patterns are changing and they are accelerating faster than anyone realized or predicted. Just over the past decade, the characteristics of the Jet Stream and the Gulf Stream have changed. Pandemics, droughts, devastating heatwaves, wildfires, massive floods, and rising oceans are accelerating. As I sit here in my house in Lone Pine, CA in 103-degree heat I can hardly see the outlines of Lone Pine Peak and Mount Whitney...
