James Sowerby Furniture
English, 1730-1813
James Sowerby (21 March 1757-25 October 1822) was an English naturalist, illustrator and mineralogist. Contributions to published works, such as A Specimen of the Botany of New Holland or English Botany, include his detailed and appealing plates. The use of vivid color and accessible texts were intended to reach a widening audience in works of natural history. The standard author abbreviation Sowerby is used to indicate this person as the author when citing a botanical name.(Biography provided by Graves International Art)

A beautiful peach coloured Art Deco biscuit jar often found being offered as a vase without its lid and nobody can deny that as such they are very decorative items, however here is an example in its entirety as intended as the ‘Pandora’s Box’ lidded biscuit jar pattern no. 2544 by the English glass makers Sowerby. Clear and frosted square panels, with a sloped and four double rib lid, the jar section with canted double rib corners on a sloped pedestal base. Each side depicts a female in relief with fabulous detailing. Free from any damage.
