Jo Hummel Art

British, b. 1982
Jo Hummel is a British abstract artist known for her distinctive painting collages, which blend formal investigations of colour, form and surface with humanist concerns about the phenomenological function of materials and process. Hummel lives and works on the Isle of Wight. Hummel studied at Falmouth University in Falmouth, England (2001) and Kingston University in London (2001-04), before erasing her MA from the Royal College of Art in 2006. Her recent residencies include the Saatchi Art Lounge in Old Truman Brewery, Frieze Week London (2017), Social Sculpture, by Kieron Reed, Artsway, Sway (2015) and Banditto Arts in Tuscany, Italy (2020) Hummel has exhibited extensively throughout Europe, including in the Royal Academy Summer Exhibition, Burlington Gardens, London (2014) and Afternoon Tea at WW Gallery, an official collateral exhibition of the 54th Venice Biennale. Other recent exhibitions include Transformer II, Nordic Art Agency, Malmö Sweden; Object Meditation, Curated by Tom Wilmott, After Nyne Gallery, London; and Girl Boss Rally, Curated by The Other Art Fair, Los Angeles, USA. Hummel works on the floor, constructing her collages out of shapes and forms she pre-cuts from painted sheets of watercolour paper. She paints each side of the paper in different colours and textures in order to give herself options. Partly regulated by structure, and partly guided by intuition, she allows planning, instinct and chance all to intervene in the creative act. Referencing her willingness to always undo an action, and to allow her works to be in flux until final decisions are made, Hummel has described her process as being related to “editing.”

SF 89-153.
By Sam Francis
Located in Malmo, SE
Artwork size: 67 x 51 cm. Frame size: 112 x 97 cm. Free shipment worldwide. Archive number SF 89-153 in the Sam Francis Foundation. Stamped with the Sam Francis Estate logo and stamped signature on verso. Sam Francis’s paintings are a journey into a dream, a voyage into the landscapes of the soul where colours are lights on fire. Alongside names such as Jackson Pollock, Willem de Kooning and Franz Kline, Sam Francis is an artist who has succeeded in demonstrating a total mastery of abstract expressionism’s impassioned and spontaneous genre. The explosions of colour – red, blue, green and yellow – the streaks, strokes and bold lines of his pictures are the physical synthesis of the deepest crevices of the soul. His colours create rhythmical motifs that, characteristically enough, can be called the “musicality” of his paintings. The work of Sam Francis provides a visible meeting place for the conscious and the unconscious. His pictures are the cross-fertilisation of what has already been experienced with what exists still only as desire, a struggle between melancholy and merrymaking. Influenced by C.G. Jung, the father of psychoanalysis, Sam Francis spent a large portion of his life exploring the premise that dreams, instincts and intuition provide, the keys which unlock the mysteries and meaning of our inner lives. He was also fascinated by the four ancient elements – earth, water, air and fire – which developed into a leitmotif in his work. Sam Francis was born in San Mateo in California, USA in 1923. After starting to paint at the age of around twenty, he soon found himself increasingly consumed by the power of art. He spent much of the 1950s in Paris, from where he not only made frequent excursions to a number of European cities, but also embarked on many journeys to South America and Asia. He continued to move from place to place, primarily in the USA and Japan, right up until his death in 1994. Sam Francis’s first...

Fullness

Located in BARCELONA, ES
The endless horizon’s which exist in Jo Hummel’s paintings are reminders of what we long for, what we crave, but rarely achieve, the place we have been trying to get to all our lives. Taken from her life living on an island, this ongoing motif orients us towards our apparent destination. With their suggestion of windows, doorways and portals, the resultant paintings lift us beyond the walls of our distracted conscious minds, and in us, elicit a yearning for serenity. Jo Hummel's work is characterised by a painted and paper collaged surface on which she employs spontaneous variations of space, colour and form. The nature of collage is that each work is in constant flux. The artist must negotiate the canvas by rearranging, choosing and adjusting, often over long periods of time. Speaking about the making of the work, Hummel describes her chosen material (paper) as domestic and ephemeral. An everyday surface which is manipulated with urgency using household tools such as scissors and knives. Her paintings are built up in layers and with joinery, often revealing fissures and fault lines...
