A Boy Scout smears lipstick across his mouth, his lips and skin all the same. A girl wears a feathered headdress, a cigarette between her fingers and a bottle of booze in her hands. These scenes, which suggest that the kids are not alright, are two of the life-sized photographs in Jonathan Hobin's new photo series Cry Babies.
Bright and exceptionally detailed, Cry Babies challenges colloquial representations of childhood. Hobin's earlier series In the Playroom (2010) suggested a loss of childhood innocence through exposure to mass media reports of the violent power play of adults. Cry Babies puts childhood itself in the spotlight. But not as an innocent victim. Here it is complex, challenging, dark and troubling.
Philippe Ariès' seminal 1960 Centuries of Childhood: A Social History of Family Life traces the development of a western concept of childhood and argues that it was only discovered in the 17th century. In the middle ages, it didn't exist. Helen Schwartzman expands on this in her chapter "The Invention of Childhood": "All children, because of the fact that they are born into a social environment, are affected by a construct that is peculiarly historical and, as such, has undergone many changes and reinterpretations in all societies."
Hobin's practice reveals these constructs. He creates arresting images that challenge stereotypes and engage with taboos. Rooted in storytelling, his work takes visual cues from popular culture, historical references, cinema and literature. What he produces are contemporary tableaux vivants.

'Dubawi' (foaled 7 February 2002) is a retired Thoroughbred racehorse and active sire.
Dubawi is a bay horse with no white markings bred in Ireland by Sheikh Mohammed's Darley Stud. He was one of the only crop of foals sired by Dubai Millennium, an outstanding racehorse. His dam, Zomaradah was a top class racemare who won the Oaks d'Italia, E. P. Julian Wasser started his career in photography in the Washington DC bureau of the Associated Press where he met and accompanied the famous news photographer Weegee – who would become a lasting influence on him. Artist biography -
(American, b.1969) is a photographer who is best known for photographing the Midwestern United States. He lives in Minneapolis, MN, which is also the city of his birth, although he relocated to Bronxville, NY, for his studies at Sarah Lawrence College. Soth's early work include a self-published book of portrait and landscape photographs entitled Sleeping by the Mississippi, which was the result of his travels along the Mississippi River. This book won him much attention from art critics, who said that his photographs conveyed a strong sense of intimacy with the landscape. His photograph Charles, which shows a man standing on the roof of his house with a model airplane in each hand, was used as a poster for the 2004 Whitney Biennial show, in which Soth's works were exhibited.
Soth, who was extremely shy during childhood and adolescence, was driven to start photographing people after being influenced by the work of portrait photographer Diane Arbus. He has said in interviews that he feels awkward approaching people and asking to take their photographs, and that he feels drawn to loners, hermits, and travelers as the subjects of his work. After his initial success with Sleeping by the Mississippi, Soth went on to publish a second photography book in 2006 entitled Niagara. For this work, he photographed people and places around Niagara Falls. He has since then produced two more books, Last Days of W and From Here to There: Alec Soth's America. He has also produced commissioned work for The New York Times Magazine.
Soth's work is included in a number of permanent collections, including those at the Minneapolis Institute of Arts, the Museum of Contemporary Photography in Chicago, the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, and the Israel Museum in Jerusalem. He is represented by the Weinstein Gallery...
