Le Corbusier Wall Decorations

French, Swiss, 1887-1965

Swiss-born Charles-Édouard Jeanneret, best known by his adopted name Le Corbusier, was a highly influential architect, designer, painter, urban planner and writer whose career spanned almost five decades.

A pioneer of progress-minded modern architecture, Le Corbusier sought to impose a rational order on the chaos of the world through design. He rejected the excessive architectural ornament and developed a style that became known as brutalism, creating buildings with elemental geometric forms that were made of industrial materials such as steel and reinforced concrete. Le Corbusier believed that pure, well-designed spaces could offer a lesson in how little is needed to achieve happiness. To convey this notion, the architect prioritized modern, open interiors and emphasized light, rational designs. His architecture and interiors share a clear sense of space and structural order, underlining the beauty in harmony, proportion and simplicity.

Le Corbusier’s furniture espouses these same ideals. His designs are spare, minimal and efficient but at the same time offer supreme comfort. Collaborating with his cousin, Pierre Jeanneret, and trailblazing designer Charlotte Perriand, he devised such iconic pieces as the LC2 Petit Confort armchair and the LC4 chaise longue. Each couples a tubular chrome frame with soft, supple leather upholstery, lending an organic warmth to an industrially made design. In his furniture, Le Corbusier broke new ground in ergonomics. The shape of the LC4 chaise is taken directly from the human form; the classic cowhide upholstery makes the sitter feel weightless; and the piece features an adjustable positioning mechanism to promote total relaxation.

Such planning and intelligence were the hallmarks of Le Corbusier’s career. Whether in his designs for private residences such as the Villa Savoye near Paris, apartment towers like the Unité D'habitation in Marseilles, or in his furniture, he worked toward a style of living that was expansive and flexible. The strength and simplicity of line of Le Corbusier’s sofas and other seating pieces give them a sculptural presence in any décor, yet they are sublimely restful. And as you will see on 1stDibs, Le Corbusier’s furniture reflects a worldly taste: it is at once refined, cosmopolitan and chic.

Pair of Vintage French Prints by Charles Cobelle
Located in Redding, CT
Pair of vintage French prints by Charles Cobelle. Circa 1950's matted and framed. Charles Cobelle, born Carl Edelman (1902–1994) was a modern French master of painting, lithography and a fine muralist, who was born in Alsace-Lorraine, France. He is considered the last link to the great tradition of the Open Line School of Paris. Cobelle received his Bachelor's and Master's Degrees from the University of Munich and continued his studies at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris.[1] Much more influential in his development, however, were his private studies with Marc Chagall and his apprenticeship in the studio of Raoul Dufy in Menton on the Riviera. Cobelle lived and painted in Paris until the late 1920s and established himself within the great tradition of the School of Paris.[2] In the late 1920s, Cobelle moved to the United States, where his paintings were immediately sought after by galleries and private collectors alike.[1] Cobelle became a U.S. citizen before the outbreak of World War II.[1] In the late 1940s to 1950s, Cobelle lived in Westport, Connecticut.Charles Cobelle lived in Ridgefield CT in a private lake community called Twixt Hills until his death. [3] By the 1950s, spurred by the commercial success of his mentor, Dufy, Cobelle had achieved phenomenal success commercially with his Parisian-influenced style.[4] Much like contemporary artists and designers at the time, his designs graced a number of pottery patterns for various pottery companies, including Midwinter Stylecraft...

Exceptionnel stairs "Cité radieuse" by Charles Edouard Jeanneret, Le Corbusier.
By Le Corbusier
Located in Nice, Cote d' Azur
Exceptional staircase called Cité radieuse by Charles Edouard Jeanneret called Le Corbusier (1887-1965) Uprights in larch, eleven steps in exotic wood. Ramps in black lacquered metal manufactured by the Jean Prouvé workshops. Restoration of use and maintenance on the ramps. Dimensions: H: 2.30; L: 69cm Provenance: Housing unit, Briey en Forêt. The staircase, identical in each duplex, is the result of close collaboration between Jean PROUVE and LE CORBUSIER. Its beginnings date back to 1922. Le Corbusier wanted to create "vertical garden cities", capable of simultaneously responding to the aspiration of the individual house (in contact with nature) and the advantages of the collective building (access to modern equipment ). This idea, perfected during the 1930s, resulted in a project for a large building in 1939, with "inner streets", "duplex" apartments, equipped roof terrace and integrated shops. The Briey Housing Unit, also called the Radiant City of Briey-en-Forêt, is a housing unit built between 1959 and 1960 in Meurthe-et-Moselle by the Franco-Swiss architect Le Corbusier according to the model that he established for Marseille. The housing unit project is part of a larger project for a new residential area in the heart of the forest, in this town in the Lorraine mining basin. It is Georges-Henri Pingusson who is the chief architect of this neighborhood project and who is also building two sets of 100 housing units and a school near the unit. The objective is to accommodate the population then in full increase in connection with the expansion of the iron mines and the steel industry. In 1955, Le Corbusier entered into official contact with the town hall of Briey, he was appointed chief architect of the project and André Wogenscky...
