Masami Teraoka Drawings and Watercolor Paintings

Japanese, b. 1936
Masami Teraoka brings a contemporary twist to traditional Japanese ukiyo-e woodblock prints, infusing them with ribald imagery and a pop art sensibility. He developed this signature graphic style after moving to the United States in 1961, where he received his BFA and MFA from Otis College of Art and Design. His highly regarded series “McDonald’s Hamburgers Invading Japan” and “31 Flavors Invading Japan” playfully fuse cross-cultural iconography to critique the widespread influence of American consumerism. Teraoka’s work has become more radical since the 1980s, when he began addressing issues like the AIDS epidemic, clergy sex abuse scandals, and nuclear proliferation. He has also drawn inspiration from religious Renaissance and Medieval art, painting grand triptychs that harken back to the stylized, flattened perspective of Edo-era prints.

Wave Series/Tattooed Woman at Sunset Beach
By Masami Teraoka
Located in Palm Desert, CA
"Wave Series/Tattooed Woman at Sunset Beach" is a unique watercolor by Masami Teraoka. The framed artwork measures 22 1/2 x 17 1/2 x 1 in. “Mere depiction of social and cultural issues is not enough. My work has to create something that goes beyond simple perception. To make a strong statement, art needs timeless aesthetic qualities. These can take any subject matter to a higher level of experience. That is the essence of what I am pursuing.” – Masami Teraoka Born in Onomichi in Hiroshima Prefecture, Teraoka studied at what is now Otis College of Art and Design in Los Angeles. His works are inspired by Japanese Ukiyo-e woodcut prints. However, Teraoaka infuses the style and techniques of the traditional art with American Pop Art. The mass-produced nature of Japanese woodcut prints...

"McDonald's Hamburgers Invading Japan/Self-Portrait", Watercolor, Figurative
By Masami Teraoka
Located in Detroit, MI
"McDonald's Hamburgers Invading Japan" is a delightfully inventive comic self-portrait by the creative genius Masami Teraoka. He has presented himself dressed in the traditional kimono robe and the artwork is in the famous Ukiyo-e style. Ukiyo-e is a genre of Japanese art which flourished from the 17th through 19th centuries. Its artists produced woodblock prints and paintings of such subjects as female beauties; kabuki actors and sumo wrestlers; scenes from history and folk tales; travel scenes and landscapes; flora and fauna; and erotica and sometimes humorous characters. The term ukiyo-e (浮世絵) translates as "picture[s] of the floating world". This delightful watercolor self-portrait, comments on the problematic relationship between the United States and Japan and the Americanization of his country in the work, utilizing subtle pun humor that is the hallmark of Japanese culture. As Teraoka explains, "the character 'maku; means spread, 'donald; means screaming, 'do' and 'han' mean often, and 'Han' also means obnoxious or annoying. 'Burger' sounds like 'Baka' which means stupidity." This work was originally purchased by filmmaker Eric Saarinen...

Israeli Surrealist Painting Female Circus Performer Acrobat with Cat
By Haya Graetz Ran
Located in Surfside, FL
Voluptuous, ala Fernando Botero, female circus performer with spectators and cat. Haya Ran was born in Holon, Israel in 1948 on the same date as the State of Israel was founded. From 1968 to 1973 Ran lived on Kibbutz Sasa. After her stay on the Kibbutz, she took courses on Graphics at The Technion 1975-1978. Tel Hai Institute Ran paints with water colors, using a multilayer method, which creates an illusion of tempera. Ran came up with this technique herself, influenced medieval painters. Ran says that the reds, browns, and golds in most of her feminist works are inspired by the performing arts: the circus, clowns, acrobats, dancers, and the fantastic. Haya Ran doesn’t identify today with any particular artistic school. Her works are born out of personal experiences and feelings. They come from the remembrances of her past, of her life and her experiences as a child, and from the fantasies she entertains about them. Her subjects emanate from her private, inner world. Haya Ran focuses on the world of the female. Her women are a peculiar lot. Their dimensions are offer wide, distorted, and grotesque, yet their poses and settings are as enticing and charming as they are sexually arousing. Others of Haya Ran’s women remain attached to elements of a lost childish innocence; dolls, wooden horses, masks, and wooden birds. Her works are executed with watercolors on paper. Her technique resembles that of Renaissance tempera. She superimposes strata and blends them together to create the impression of a past era. She creates not by putting down on paper her sudden impulses, but by devoting painstaking attention to the smallest details over countless hours. Au Cimetière Monsieur- Pencil and Watercolor on Paper by F. Picabia - 1931
By Francis Picabia
Located in Roma, IT
Au Cimetière Monsieur... is a black pencil and watercolor drawing realized by Francis Picabia in 1931. Hand signed lower left, with title lower right. A certificate of inclusion in the Catalog Raisonné being prepared by the Picabia Committee, dated 30 October 2019, will be delivered in original along with the work. Drawing originally realized by Picabia to illustrate the important volume "Le Peseur d'Ames" by André Maurois, published by Editions Antoine Roche in 1931. Though specifically realized for the volume, the drawing was not selected for publication and remained in the artist's personal collection. Cm. 27,4x22. Good conditions. Francis Picabia (1879-1953) was born in Paris to a french mother and a Spanish father who was chancellor at the Cuban embassy in Paris. He had a comfortable childhood, even though he was emotionally troubled. He studied at the École nationale supérieure des beaux-arts. At the beginning of his career, from 1908 to 1913, he was strongly influenced first by the Barbizon School and by Alfred Sisley and Camille Pissarro, then by impressionism, cubism and finally abstractionism. Around 1911 he joined the Puteaux Group which he met in the studio of Jacques Villon in the village of Puteaux. He then became friends with the artist Marcel Duchamp. Some members of the group were Apollinaire, Albert Gleizes, Roger de La Fresnaye, Fernand Léger and Jean Metzinger. From 1913 to 1915 Picabia was often in New York. These years can be identified as the proto-Dada period, which consists mostly of the so-called mechanical portraits (portraits méchaniques): these works ironically proposed mechanistic themes of random tangles of metal parts, paintings and drawings of machines. All these mechanisms on the one hand mocked the cult of the machine, on the other they alluded to sexual intercourse...
