Moise Kisling Prints and Multiples

French, Polish, 1891-1953

Moïse Kisling was born Mojżesz Kisling in 1891 in Kraków, which was part of the Austro-Hungarian Empire. He studied at the School of Fine Arts in Kraków, where his teachers included Jozef Pankiewicz, a fervent admirer of Auguste Renoir and the French Impressionists who encouraged him to travel to Paris, the international centre for artistic creativity in the early 20th century.

In 1910, Kisling moved to Montmartre in Paris, and a few years later to Montparnasse, where he lived for the next 27 years and became part of an émigré community that included the artists Amedeo Modigliani, Georges Braque, Pablo Picasso, Jules Pascin, Max Jacob, André Salmon and Chaïm Soutine. Jules Pascin and later Amedeo Modigliani lived in the same building, and Modigliani painted a portrait of him in 1916 (it is held in the collection of the Musée d'Art Moderne de la Ville de Paris).

Kisling’s style used in painting landscapes is similar to that of Marc Chagall and, a master at depicting the female body, his surreal nudes and portraits earned him the widest acclaim.

At the outbreak of World War I, Kisling volunteered for service in the French Foreign Legion, and in 1915 he was seriously wounded in the Battle of the Somme, for which he was awarded French citizenship.

Kisling volunteered for army service again in 1940 during World War II, although he was 49. When the French Army was discharged at the time of the surrender to the Germans, Kisling emigrated to the United States, as he rightly feared for his safety as a Jew in occupied France. He exhibited in New York and Washington and then settled in California, where he lived until 1946.

Moïse Kisling returned to France after the war and defeat of Germany and died in 1953 in Sanary-sur-Mer, Var, Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur, France where a residential street in the town is named after him.

"Crystal and Jade" Still Life Lithograph in Ink on Paper
By John Taylor Arms
Located in Soquel, CA
"Crystal and Jade" Still Life Lithograph in Ink on Paper Delicate and detailed lithograph of a crystal glass and jade vase by John Taylor Arms (American, 1887-1953). On the left side of the composition, there is a crystal martini glass, with intricate designs. Next to it is a jade vase or urn, with a carved surface. They are sitting on an ornate tablecloth, with a strand of beads, possibly a rosary. Numbered ("VI"), inscribed with a dedication ("To Georgiana Brewer and Jasper S. Mathews Jr from Dorothy and John Taylor Arms"), signed ("John Taylor Arms"), and dated ("1940") along the bottom edge. Presented in a wood frame with an off-white mat. Frame size: 16.5"H x 14.75"W Image size: 8.5"H x 7.25"W John Taylor Arms was born in Washington, DC in 1887. He studied law at Princeton University, transferring to the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Boston, to study architecture, graduating in 1912. After serving as an officer in the United States Navy during World War I, he devoted himself full-time to etching. He published his first original etchings in 1919. His initial subject was the Brooklyn Bridge in New York City near which he worked. Arms developed a successful career as a graphic artist in the 1920s and 1930s, specializing in series of etchings of Gothic churches and cathedrals in France and Italy. In addition to medieval subjects, Arms made a series of prints of American cities. He used sewing needles and magnifying glasses to get a fine level of detail. A member of many printmaking societies, Arms served as president of the Society of American Graphic Artists. An educator, Arms wrote the Handbook of Print Making and Print Makers (1934) and did numerous demonstrations and lectures. Arms was elected into the National Academy of Design as an Associate member in 1930, and became a full member in 1933. His work was also part of the painting event in the art competition at the 1932 Summer Olympics...

Portrait Woman Original French Mourlot Modernist Lithograph 1951 Francoise Gilot
By Françoise Gilot
Located in Surfside, FL
Rare vintage limited edition Stone Lithograph printed at Mourlot in Paris. this is from a signed and numbered portfolio but the individual sheets are not hand signed and numbered. Francois Gilot, (1921-) studied English Literature at Cambridge University, and then, encouraged by her father, studied international law, though she secretly also took art lessons at the same time. In 1943, during her first exhibition in Paris, Gilot (then 21) met Pablo Picasso (who was 61) for the first time. In 1946, Gilot started a 10-year relationship with the notorious womanizer and had two of his children,Claude and Paloma. As a result of her relationship with Picasso, Gilot "became both a witness and a participant in one of the last great periods of the modern art movement in Europe. Their circle included poets, philosophers, writers, and many of the legends of the art world, such as Braque, Chagall, Cocteau and Matisse. In 1953, Gilot left Picasso and the home they shared in Vallauris and moved back to Paris. "Lithographs are printed from stones and each stone is an echo of my artistic voice," said Gilot. "Many artists use their art as a personal catharsis. I have never done that. I am more intellectual. Each artistic process -- oils, lithographs, monotypes -- allows me a different freedom and suits a different mood." While Gilot did her first lithograph in 1950 at the Mourlot Atelier, the same studio used by Picasso, Henri Matisse, Marc Chagall, Jean Miro and Jean Dubuffet, it was in the 1970s that she really began to experiment with the process. "In the beginning I turned to lithography because I wanted to show off my technical skills. Now I am more interested in color," said Gilot. "I also thought that lithographs would make my works more accessible to young collectors." While her oils are priced up to $100,000, her lithographs begin at $2,000 and her monotypes range from $1,000 to $2,500.
