Royal Copenhagen Dinner Plates

Danish

Producers of the finest in Danish porcelain, Royal Copenhagen is a company steeped in tradition. Its celebrated blue-and-white china patterns as well as its famed hallmark depicting the royal crown and three waves — symbolizing the monarch who founded the company and the three major waterways of Denmark — are emblems of master craftsmanship.

Royal Copenhagen was founded in 1775 by Queen Juliane Marie. Years earlier, after the death of her husband, King Frederick V, Juliane’s stepson ascended the throne. Shortly into his reign, he went insane, and the Queen became the head of Denmark and its small empire. She sought to improve Denmark’s economy and founded factories around the country to promote domestic growth and international trade. Royal Copenhagen was one of the first of these. Royal Copenhagen first made dinnerware and vases with blue-and-white motifs inspired by Chinese porcelain, then the rage in aristocratic Europe. Many of these designs are still made today.

Apart from its classic patterns, Royal Copenhagen has adapted to the changing styles of time and appeals to many different tastes. Their prolific body of work includes Rococo-style porcelain statues that incorporate stylistic floral patterns in an Art Nouveau style, as well as modern vases by such noted 20th century Danish ceramists as Axel Salto. Whether used for special occasions or displayed as part of a design collection, Royal Copenhagen pieces represent a legacy of the highest quality.

Crustacean Flora Danica Plate by Royal Copenhagen
By Royal Copenhagen
Located in New Orleans, LA
This hand-painted porcelain plate by Royal Copenhagen is adorned by the firm's highly regarded Flora Danica pattern. While the majority of the motifs in the Flora Danica pattern capture the native fungi and flowers of Denmark, this plate is part of a rare series of crustacean motifs. At its center is a life-like representation of the Nephrops norvegicus, or Norway lobster, while the creature’s Latin name is inscribed on the reverse. Accented with a delicately gilded edge, this plate is a testament to the skill and talent of Royal Copenhagen artists. Once the porcelain supplier to the Queen of Denmark, Royal Copenhagen is known throughout the world for their quality craftsmanship and creative innovation. Founded in 1775 under the authority of Queen Juliane Marie, the first pieces ever produced were complex dining services for the Danish Royal Family...

Flora Danica Porcelain Dinner Service, 75 Pieces
By Royal Copenhagen
Located in New Orleans, LA
Crafted by the Royal Copenhagen Porcelain Manufactory, this 75-piece dinner service features one of the most prestigious porcelain patterns ever produced — the coveted Flora Danica pattern. The service for 12 boasts rich, hand-painted botanical motifs taken directly from the plate illustrations of the Danish atlas of the botany of the same name. Each is a unique work of art executed with meticulous skill and artistry. A work of scientific examination as well as artistic mastery, the designs are culled from George Christian Oeder's 1771 publication Flora Danica (Flowers of Denmark), an encyclopedia including 3,000 hand-colored copper plate prints depicting every wild plant known to exist in Denmark, including mosses, fungi, ferns and flowers. The creation of the Flora Danica service was the life's work of Johann Christoph Bayer, one of the most gifted porcelain artists of the late 18th century. Commissioned in 1790 by King Christian VII of Denmark for Empress Catherine the Great of Russia, it took Bayer over 12 years to complete the service. Unfortunately, Catherine died in 1796 before it was complete, and the service was then placed in the collection of the Danish Royal Family. Flora Danica was first used on January 29, 1803, for the banquet celebrating the birthday of King Christian VII. Since that time, this exquisite pattern has remained the centerpiece of ceremonial occasions, weddings and visits by foreign dignitaries. Reputed to be one of the most original and inspired products of the European art industry, Flora Danica is one of the last luxury services still in production. All pieces display Royal Copenhagen marks This 75-piece service comprises: 12 dinner plates 12 large bowls 12 small bowls 12 chocolate cups with underplates a large oval serving dish an oval handled serving dish a salad bowl a lidded tureen a fruit basket a teapot a large pickle dish a small pickle dish a wine cooler a small sugar bowl...

Yes, Royal Copenhagen is still in business but the company has undergone many buy-outs and acquisitions over the years. Originally founded in Copenhagen in 1775, the company imitated the exquisite china from the Ming and Qing dynasties. Royal patronage and top-quality craftsmanship quickly earned the brand a reputation, making its products quite collectible. • 1stDibs ExpertApril 5, 2022
Yes, Royal Copenhagen still produces some figurines. However, most of the manufacturer's most well-known lines are no longer in production. As of January 2022, only the annual figurines are still currently in production. Today, Royal Copenhagen is a brand owned by Fiskars Group rather than an independent company. You'll find a collection of Royal Copenhagen figurines on 1stDibs.
