Sally Mann Art

American, b. 1951
Sally Mann was born Sally Turner Munger in May of 1951 in Lexington, Virginia. The youngest of three and the only daughter, she became a renowned photographic artist. She developed an interest in photography while attending Putney School in the 1960s. Her father encouraged her using large 5 x 7 cameras, which became the origin of her using large format cameras. Her earliest work was photographing the law school building at Washington and Lee University in the 1970s. She photographed her family, especially her young children, in the 1990s. This led to controversy since some photos featured nudity. In the mid 1990s she began photographing Southern landscapes, including those in Virginia, Georgia, Louisiana and Mississippi. Landscape photos were done using a process called wet plate. This created eerie, memorable images. She published two books in 1997 and 1999 of southern landscapes. Her sixth book, published in 2005 included images such as battlefields, landscapes covered in Kudzu and mansions in decaying states. Married to Larry for over 40 years, they have three children. Emmett, born in 1979, Jessie, born in 1981 and Virginia, born in 1985. Some of Sally's photographic work focuses on family in various life stages. Her husband, diagnosed 15 years ago with muscular dystrophy, was her most recent photographic subject. Awards include those from the National Endowment For Arts, John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Fellowship and an honorary Doctorate of fine arts from Corcoran College. She was also named Time Magazine's best photographer in 2001. Her works have appeared in the Metropolitan Museum of Art, Corcoran Gallery of Art, the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston and the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art.

Mother of the Forest
By Beth Moon
Located in Sante Fe, NM
*22x30" editions and 24x36" editions are platinum prints. Editions with a width of 60" or greater are archival pigment prints* Baobabs are one of Africa’s natural wonders: they can live more than 2,500 years, and their massive, water-storing trunks can grow to more than one hundred feet in circumference. They also serve as a renewable source of food, fiber, and fuel, as well as a focus of spiritual life. But now, suddenly, the largest baobabs are dying off , literally collapsing under their own weight. Scientists believe these ancient giants are being dehydrated by drought and higher temperatures, likely the result of climate change. Photographer Beth Moon, already responsible for some of the most indelible images of Africa’s oldest and largest baobabs, has undertaken a new photographic pilgrimage to bear witness to this environmental catastrophe and document the baobabs that still survive. In this oversize volume, she presents breathtaking new duotone tree portraits of the baobabs of Madagascar, Senegal, and South Africa. She also recounts her eventful journey to visit these fantastic trees in a moving diaristic text studded with color travel photos.

Black and White Photography by Cuban Photographer René Peña, Self Portrait
By Rene Peña
Located in Brooklyn, NY
Limited Edition Series. Black and White Photography by Cuban Photographer René Peña, Self Portrait René Peña (Rene de Jesus Pena Gonzalez) is a self-taught photographer born in Havana, Cuba in 1957. His photography is characterized by stark contrasts, between black and white, subject and background, subject and object. His work often focuses on the duality between human inability to escape institutionalization and human desire for individualism. His interest in contrast is also reflected in his place of residence: Peña currently inhabits the Cerro neighborhood of Cuba which is home to a mostly poor African-Caribbean population, despite having been an enclave of Havana's richest families in the 19th century. René Peña graduated from the Higher pedagogic Institute of Foreign Languages, University of Havana with a specialization in English in 1983. In the late 1980s he entered the national world of photography and since 1990 became leader of the new trends of Cuban photography, first by handling interiors and domestic situations in modern-day Cuba and later making studies of his own body in aspects such as negritude, sexual ambiguity and the influence of consumerism through self-portraits. He conceives his series on the basis of a conceptual, formal and structurally different analysis of all the parameters established up to the present, going from a brutal expressionism to a distinct homoeroticism, with strong mystic elements, trends from experimental painting, and a certain theatrical dramatization. He has had important solo shows and participated in group exhibitions in Cuba, the United States, Venezuela, Canada, France and Germany. His work is part of important collections, not only national but also at world level, such as the National Museum of Fine Arts, Cuba; the Ludwig Foundation of Cuba; Reinhard Schultz Collection, Germany; photographic archive Tuscany, Italy; Southeast Museum of Photography, Daytona, USA; Houston Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, Texas, USA; collection of the province of Hainuat, Belgium; and Lehigh University Pennsylvania...
