William Samuel Horton Art

American, 1865-1936
A landscape painter, William Horton lived and worked primarily in Paris where he was a member of the Societe Moderne, the Societe Internationale, and the Salon d'Automne. He was a wealthy man and a friend of artists who became famous such as Monet and Degas and other Impressionists. He was born in Grand Rapids, Michigan, and was raised in North Dakota. His first art-related job was as an illustrator for Northwest Magazine. Disinherited by his family because of his commitment to art, he studied first at the Art Institute of Chicago and then at the Art Student's League and the National Academy of Design in New York. He married in 1892, and the couple went to Paris where he enrolled in the Academy Julian and where they lived the remainder of their lives, becoming very active in the American-French art community and exhibiting regularly in the salons. Between 1926 and 1928, on a return to the United States, he did a series of views of New York skyscrapers because he was inspired by their appearance of establishing the position of human beings on the earth.

Being able to go to my studio five days weekly and paint for several hours, living in a supportive community, having family and friends who encourage me--all have contributed to helping me become an artist. Being fortunate to study with some of the artists I admire has kept me painting from the garden, people and my favorite things. With the support of galleries, teaching and doing demos, how could I do anything else? My goal is to try to be the best I can be by always being a student, looking for new ideas and stretching my horizons." Upon retirement from a 33-year teaching career, Lu rented a studio in Loveland and began concentrating on her oil and watercolor painting. Learning from artists she had followed and admired throughout the years her painting became a full time career that lasted 17-years. Beginning in 1992, she studied with renowned painters Richard Schmid, Clyde Aspevig, Joyce Pike...

My Roses with Peaches
By Teresa Vito
Located in Loveland, CO
My Roses with Peaches by Teresa Vito 20x16" oil Floral Still Life Bouquet of Roses surrounded by a table full of peaches Signed lower right ABOUT THE ARTIST: Teresa Vito's paintings reflect the beauty she sees all around her. She loves painting living energy, whether it is the outdoor landscape, berries and flowers picked for a still life, or the unending variety of the human face. Vito has been a full time oil painter since 1992. She currently lives in Pueblo, Colorado. Vito has won numerous national and regional awards including an Award of Excellence, Best Portrait and Best Still Life Awards from Oil Painters of America. She also received the Best of Show award from the Artists of Colorado Exhibition held at the Colorado History Museum. Teresa Vito grew up in a one store town in upstate New York. She had never met an artist or had gone to an art gallery until she went to college. She chose to major in art because she loved to draw. College offered no clue as to how to become an artist so she decided to try to figure it out on her own. With $250 and a train ticket to Denver (she had never been west of Ohio) carrying a suitcase, a purse and a portfolio of nude drawings, Vito began her artistic journey. During her twenties she did every job she could find that was art related. Vito worked in a frame shop and gallery, at art supply stores, made posters and newspaper advertisements and created display windows in downtown Denver. The year the Art Students League in Denver opened, she maneuvered a job there running a small art supply store. It was here she found out about the world of Artist's Workshops. Vito learned as much as she could looking through the door of the many classes taught by master artists, who were in fact making a living with their art. With this inspiration Vito saved up enough money in 1992 to live cheaply for a year and become a full time artist. She has never looked back and strives to continue to be the best possible painter she can be. She now teaches workshops with gratitude and generosity, to share in all that she has learned. Vito has a BA in Fine Art from the State University of New York at Geneseo and has taught and studied at the Art Students League at Denver and the Loveland Academy of Fine Arts. She has expanded her knowledge by taking numerous workshops over the years with artists Quang Ho, Ramon Kelley...

Provenance: From the estate of the artist and thence by descent William Samuel Horton is considered by critics to be one of the leading members of American Impressionism, best-known for his Monetesque sunsets and sunrises, Swiss Alpine landscapes, New York skylines and Norwegian fjord scenes. Horton parted with few of his works during his lifetime. Exemplifying the artist’s unique abilities as a colourist, these extraordinary works on paper demonstrate the artist’s mastery of pastel.W.S. Horton grew up in a wealthy family and left home in 1883 to study at the Art Institute of Chicago and the Art Students League of New York. In 1892, Horton married the New York debutante Carlotta Lorrie Gray and in 1893 they moved to Holland, later settling in Paris where Horton joined the Académie Julian art school. American Impressionist mountain view landscape of Gstaad in late afternoon

William Samuel Horton (American, 1865 – 1936) A wintry view of the village 46 x 55 cm. Pastel on paper Provenance: the estate of the artist William Samuel Horton is considered by critics to be one of the leading members of American Impressionism, best-known for his Monetesque sunsets and sunrises, Swiss Alpine landscapes, New York skylines and Norwegian fjord scenes. In 1918 Horton moved to England, continuing to travel often to Europe, painting and sketching scenes in Switzerland, France and Italy. During his travels the artist developed his own Impressionist style, and like Monet focussed on the effects of light on colour, atmosphere, form, shadow and shapes. Like the founding Impressionist, Horton painted the same motif or scene at different times of the day, studying the effect of the light. Examples include his 1934 dramatic sunsets and sunrises over the coastal fjords, planes and mountains of Norway, his recognisable cityscapes of the New York skyline, most notably of the Ritz and Heckscher towers (1924-1930) and his snowy landscapes of the Swiss Alps. In 1935 the artist travelled to Asia (China, Singapore, India and Indonesia), continuing to paint and sketch, including on board ships. W.S. Horton and his wife were relatively wealthy during their lifetime, selling few of his artworks. When Horton died in 1936 he left over 1000 oils, pastels and drawings to their son William Gray...
