In this fully collaborative work, artists Crombach and Stern explore subject matter derived from the problematic and mythologized human relationship to the natural world. When the body of a whale sinks to the abyssal plain and forms an ecosystem, this is called a whale fall. Whale Fall (2019) consists of glazed porcelain assemblages and furniture carved into skeletal forms. Clusters of partially recognizable porcelain objects allude to both the decaying flesh of a whale and Baroque still-life painting. Whale Fall oscillates between shipwreck and whale carcass. Illuminated from within, it is an otherworldly creature in its own right; a fleshy thing in a moment of arrested decay.

Having been raised as your everyday average suburbanite, it wasn't until he was eight years old that he discovered his Liǥwildax̱w/Kwakwaka’wakw heritage. Later in life, this discovery would be the conceptual focal point that helped launch his unique art practice.
Assu's artistic practice is diverse: spanning painting, sculpture, photography, digital art and printmaking. Sonny negotiates Western and Kwakwaka’wakw principles of art making as a means of exploring his family history and the experiences of being an Indigenous person in the colonial state of Canada.
Having cut his teeth in Vancouver's art scene, Assu packed up and moved to Montreal to be with the love of his life. Five years later, along with his wife and beautiful daughter, Sonny moved back to BC, eventually settling back "home" in unceded Liǥwildaʼx̱w territory (Campbell River, BC.).

Conceived as an expression of a decade of dialoguing creative practices, the exhibition explores the formation and transmission of artisanal knowledge by presenting finely-crafted objects in a contemporary light.
Hélène Chouinard’s works extend from her recent material research on clay colouring techniques. She methodically mixes two to three base pigments in various proportions, adding these directly to the clay to create a desired tone. Once molded and baked, this tone permeates the resulting object, not just its surface. Fascinated by the formal range of vessels from the mundane to the sophisticated, Chouinard reproduces everyday glass bottles by molding them in coloured porcelain. Each bottle bears...

Sonny Assu’s childhood summers were spent on a his grandfather’s commercial fishing boat, navigating the waters along the coast of Vancouver Island. Assu would trace their boat’s movement on the navigational charts - comparing the landscape in front of him with its abstract representations in a spiral bound book. His grandfather had no need for these abstracted images of the land and water around him, he could read these places like the back of his hand.

Glossy side Up is a solo presentation of recent work by Berlin-based artist Julia Lia Walter. Since the beginning of her studies, Walter’s experiments with merging digital and analogue technologies have expanded the definition of traditional painting. Using light projections and acrylic paint on transparent plastic surfaces, Walter creates abstract, multi-dimensional works which explore harmony, time, and nature in complex and innovative ways. Using a unique formula of iridescent emulsion to paint on both the recto and verso of coloured Plexiglas fragments and large sheets of transparent foil, Walter destroys the logic and rules of space, pushing our understanding of the dimensionality of painting and what constitutes a canvas.
In Walter’s smaller Plexiglas works, light enters each layer from multiple angles to produce refractions and shadows that create a sense of completeness and harmony. The geometric certainty of the straight lines and sharp edges is counterbalanced by the undulating sweep of visible, expressive paint gestures. Taking inspiration from environmental structures, ecosystems, and natural formations which are continually growing or in the process of developing, Walter’s colours and forms are reminiscent of ice-flows, mineral specimens, unfurling petals, or tree rings. When viewed in series, her watercolours on paper have a quiet exactitude and analytical quality reminiscent of natural history studies; each shape is determined by the meticulously positioned pigment within a single, precise brushstroke.
