New Tarquin Ebker Black White Asymmetrical Delphos Dress w Provenance – S, 1978

About the Item

One of the most cryptic designers of the 20th century, Tarquin Ebker was a disciple of Charles James and designed for Hattie Carnegie in the mid-century. Few of his early pieces exist despite his architectural tailoring and illustrious training. This ensemble was a gift to the designer’s great nephew for his new bride and has never been worn, though its likeness (in red) was worn to the wedding by the designer’s wife Cho. Modern despite its age, the set is made even more relevant thanks to its miraculous cut, which can be styled in innumerable ways and even worn separately for further versatility. Two-piece cocktail dress ensemble with strapless slip dress and contrasting tunic of silk plissé. Dress features silk ribbon hanging straps (which may also be worn as spaghetti straps) and gathered elastic top opening; asymmetrical hemline plunges from hip on one side to mid-calf on opposite. Tunic features one-sleeve construction and gathered lettuce-edge top opening. May be worn with full sleeve on or off shoulder and can be worn with hemline matching or opposing dress; slip dress may also be worn as a skirt, as did the designer's wife. Both pieces lettuce edge hems; unlined but opaque. fabric: silk charmeuse noteworthy: dry clean only condition: new repairs: none measurements •dress• straps: 6” drop underarm circumference: to 34” bust: free (to 50” fully expanded) waist: free (to 66” fully expanded) hips: free (to 70” fully expanded) length: 23” one side, 40 ½” opposite side sweep: 92” •tunic• neckline: to 22” when worn on shoulder sleeve length: 22” from shoulder, 15” sleeve circumference: to 31” fully expanded bust: free (to 60” fully expanded) waist: free (to 72” fully expanded) length: 16” from underarm on one side, 33” from underarm on opposite side sweep: to 100” label: Tarquin Ebker size: no size tag present; modern size small due to underarm circumference measurement on slip dress
