Oscar De la Renta Lesage Embroidered Jacket sz 12
About the Item
This is truly the finest collection of embroidered garments that I have seen in my thirty years in the fashion business. The museum-quality handwork can only be described as breathtaking. It is rendered with extraordinary care and quality. The word “couture” is vastly overused in today’s fashion terminology, but these pieces represent the very finest workmanship of haute couture that was available in the world, the last glorious era of “les petits mains.” The quality of embroidery could only be attributed to Lesage.
These pieces are labeled “Oscar de la Renta,” who designed them for one of his most discerning clients of the 1980’s. This was the era when he was also the designer for the prestigious haute couture house of Balmain in Paris. The French influence and attention to detail is unmistakable in the design and manufacture of these remarkable pieces.
This is an elegantly designed black jacket embellished with museum-quality matte and shiny gold embroidery along one side. The fabric is a heavy matte crepe which appears to be a combination of wool, silk and a touch of stretch. It has simple princess seams and narrows at the waist, with a slight trapeze peplum flaring from the natural waist to the hips. It is lined in heavy silk satin and fastens with an invisible snap and dress hook. It is meant to be worn closed to feature the exquisite embroidery which embellishes the asymmetrical side of the jacket.
This embroidery is comparable to that found on papal garments or royal investiture robes. It is deeply three-dimensional, with multiple embroidery layers actually rising from the surface of the fabric. Fetchingly applied in tones of matte and shiny gold, it literally glows over the black background. The motif includes elaborate oak, rose and acanthus leaves, wirework twisting ribbons, beaded and sequined leaves, and a series of crystal, sequin, beaded, wirework and crocheted flowers which are raised by round beads sewn beneath the petals to add dimensionality. The edge is piped with for rows of embellishment, first a bright gold slim rope, then a wider edging of gold wirework, then a set of rounded crystals set atop golden bugle beads, and then a final row of matte gold bugle beads. The rest of the jacket is completely unembellished, which adds to its timeless chic.
The whole effect is one of simple elegance. The coat itself is a classic, simple design that is flattering on women of every age, and could be worn with a long skirt, palazzo pants, or a duchesse satin ball skirt. This is a grand, important piece of embroidery that is timeless in its workmanship and sophistication. It makes a statement of extraordinary taste and the finest quality embroidery one could hope to see, much less wear. This jacket is forever.

Oscar De La Renta
Oscar de la Renta was not just a designer for the ages but a designer for women of all ages — from Hollywood starlets to silver-haired doyennes, from fashion icons (Sarah Jessica Parker) to iconic brides (Amal Alamuddin Clooney), from leading ladies of hip-hop (Nicki Minaj) to First Ladies of the United States (Jacqueline Kennedy all the way through to Michelle Obama). The secret to his broad and enduring appeal? “I have always thought that my role as a designer is to do the very best I can for a woman,” de la Renta told 1stDibs in a 2010 profile.
And for de la Renta, doing the very best meant making a woman feel beautiful, glamorous and full of confidence, whether she was walking down the red carpet or a crowded city street. "You carry the clothes, the clothes don't carry you," he went on to say in our story.
A perennial favorite on 1stDibs, Oscar de la Renta designs evolved over the years, as the large selection of items below attests, but whether bolero or ball gown, vintage or current, the pieces exude elegant sophistication and enduring originality — much like the man himself.
