Chinese Famille Rose Phoenix and Peony Baluster Jar, c. 1900

About the Item

During the 18th century, Europeans provided an eager market for Chinese export porcelain, especially the colorful and fanciful ware known as “famille rose.” Named for a palette of opaque overglaze enamels that favored roses and pinks, famille rose porcelain ware was crafted with the same technical virtuosity as imperial porcelain but designed for Western tastes. This famille rose baluster jar is decorated in bright colors with pink cartouche scenes of a pair of regal phoenixes surrounded by peony blossoms. In combination with peonies, symbols of love and tender affection, the two phoenixes are understood to represent a pair of inseparable lovers. The surrounding area is filled with pink peonies against a turquoise field and bordered by rectangular lappets at the base and yellow ruyi at the neck. A colorful celebration of love and affection, this jar is a wonderful way to brighten any interior. From the collection of Frances and Gary Comer.
