Pair of Chinese Famille Rose Baluster Jars with Ancient Censers, c. 1850

About the Item

Beautifully commemorated on this pair of baluster jars, censers have been used for thousands of years as a part of funeral rites or prayer offerings. Filled with dried aromatic plants and essential oils, the censer issued fragrant smoke that forged a connection to the spiritual realm. This pair of Qing-dynasty vases pays colorful tribute to the time-honored vessel in style of famille rose ware. Sometimes referred to as "yangcai" or "foreign colors," the famille rose style emerged during the 18th century and employs pastel palette of opaque overglaze enamels that favors roses and pinks. We love these impressive jars for their intricate decoration and colorful homage to the past.
