Japanese Meiji Terracotta Wall Plaque Vantines Oriental Store New York

About the Item

A rare Japanese Meiji terracotta wall plaque depicting a traveller being attacked dating from around 1890. The plaque depicting a relief moulded scene from Japanese mythology shows a traveller being attacked within a mountainous landscape, his lantern and hat lying overturned on the ground. With hanging holes to the back rim the plaque was imported by A.A. Vantines Oriental Store in New York and has an impressed crossed flag mark as used by the importer to the reverse. In good condition.
