Japanese Unglazed Pottery Figure of a Pedlar Being Stung by a Wasp

About the Item

An unusual and finely made vintage Japanese unglazed pottery figure of a pedlar being stung by a wasp dating from the 20th century. The figure is seated on a rectangular mat and is dressed in traditional wear with a loosely fitted top embroidered to the back and tied with a belt around his waist and wears a pair of short length loosely fitting trousers with his hair tied. He grimaces as a large wasp has landed on his head and appears to have kicked over a basket with his wares spread over the mat. The hand-crafted figure is lightly made in clay and has not been glazed and the figure has an impressed seal mark to the base. Provenance: acquired from the British Art market. In good condition with light wear and small chip to the rim of the basket.

  • Chinese Pottery Ceramic Glazed Mud Figure of Court Lady Tang Dynasty with Stand
    Located in Studio City, CA
Simply gorgeous and so delicately and beautifully made. This work has been molded in a whitish, dense terracotta, typical of the region of the capital of Luoyang, and then lightly glazed. We are not sure how to date this work. We believe, based on comparisons, that this piece could date as far back as the Tang dynasty (though we are not experts and have not had this verified by one. Again, this is not our area of expertise). The white terracotta and glaze appear correct as does the figures stately pose and elaborate hairstyle which was a characteristic feature of Tang pottery women. The people of ancient China believed that some part of the essence and life force of a human being was contained in the hair. Much time and effort went into this to create elaborate coiffures that the woman proudly displayed when in public. The Tang dynasty is also the only period in Chinese History to have known a female sovereign, The Empress Wu Zetian (625-706). Comes with Lucite display stand...
