Korean White Ceramic Brush Holder Joseon Dynasty

About the Item

An antique Korean white porcelain brush holder in floral pattern with cutout design from late Joseon dynasty circa 19th century. Cherished by the scholars, this brushpot would grace the desk of the man's study. Bordered by the thin ribboned bands of carved, the body of the brush holder features stylized large blooming peonies intercepted by smaller lotus like flowers, all set in an exuberant foliage design, punctuated by an open work of cutout design. The petals and the leaves have finely incised veins to achieve a realistic appeal. The highly graphic motif was a composition of different flora together as an ideal image. The glaze is nearly pure white with a tiny tint of greyish blue, The short foot ring is slightly recessed from the body. A brush holder with a very similar design from the same period is in the collection Victoria and Albert Musuem in London (c.351 dash 1921). See the second brushpot on the illustration 36 on page 86-87 of the book "Korean Art and Design" by Beth McKillop.
