Apothecary / Medicin Chest of Drawer Furniture
About the Item
Medicine chest in original red lacquer with 40 drawers. with Chinese calligraphy in lacquer.
These were used to store and organise Chinese herbs and the drawers were labeled according to the herbs that were stored inside.
Previously in China, the doctor and pharmacist were the same person and the medicine chest was used for storage of minerals and herbs that were included in natural medicine.
Carefully restored to original condition and natural age-related patina, highlighted by a clear varnish surface finish.
