A Pair of Late Qing Large Jumu Armchairs

About the Item

A pair of late Qing large Jumu (southern Elm) armchairs. This type of armchairs where the chair's back, arms and seat are at 90 degrees angles to each other is commonly referred to as "Taishi" armchairs in China, which loosely translates to "Grand Master's" armchairs. The original woven seat on the chairs were already damaged and they were replaced with new rattan seats with an added plank below for strength and durability. These chairs have excellent and attractive patina. The carvings are simple and elegant, and the relief carvings on the back and front of seat are very well done, the circular shapes of the carvings resemble cloud patterns. The middle portion of the front of seat recess slightly, which makes an interesting detail. There is some fading of the colour on the seat, footrest and feet, which is consistent with its usage. The footrest were also nicely worn to have this soft curved edges. These are quite heavy, weighing approx. 15.5kg per unit.
