Rare 18th Century Chinese Lacquered Buddhist Incense Table
About the Item
This beautiful and rare, lacquered 18th century Buddhist incense table with a great patina of original dark oxblood and red lacquer is craved from Yumu (Chinese Northern Elm) and is from the Shanxi province of China.
The upper apron is finely carved with stylized floral motifs.
The elegantly curved legs terminate with ball feet that is carved onto a square stretcher. The square base stretcher has carved side openings to give it a sense of airiness. The center of the base is craved with the Buddhist Wanzi symbol.
Wànzì in Chinese, Manji in Japanese is the Buddhist symbol means good fortune and universal harmony, it represents the harmonious interplay of the many opposites in life – – heaven and earth, day and night, etc.
