Japanese Meiji Period Antique Lacquer Box with Gold Maki-e Decoration

About the Item

A fine antique Japanese Meji Period lacquer box decorated with a fan and a stylized star shaped window in the maki-e technique. The fan at the top right corner, fully opened depicting an idyllic traditional Japanese landscape with two charming thatched roof houses among beautiful trees and shrubs next to a water feature in varying colors of gold with the central tree leaves in oxidized silver. A star shaped window at the bottom left reveals another lovely landscape with a group of three thatched roof buildings on an island in the far right and a larger more formal structure, near left next to a vigorous Mugo pine tree with needles done in silver. The artist's signature is on the lower right. Upon opening this box, a coppery gold maki-e interior is revealed. The box is in wonderful condition with wear commensurate with age, see photo 9 of bottom for the slight wear. Early Meji period, 19th century.
