Japanese Bronze and Mixed Metal Table Screen – Nogawa

About the Item

As part of our Japanese works of art collection we are delighted to offer this most unusual Meiji Period (1868-1912) miniature mixed metal table screen by the highly regarded Nogawa company, the delightful four fold screen consist of individual panel housed within a gilt bronze frame, the rear panels carved to depict a scene of boats in a lake beneath Mount Fuji , the Tori gate in the foreshore and a pagoda in the backdrop, the final panel artist signed and bearing the distinctive seal of the Nogawa company. The four panels to the front are formed as Shakudo and have been painstakingly decorated with various mixed metal inlays as well as butterflies to each of the lower sections. The panels above decorated with traditional scenes of bamboo, maple lit by the moonlight, bijins with parasols in a tranquil setting and a well known comical scene of characters fleeing thunder and lightning under umbrellas, once again the artist has signed one of the front panels, it was not uncommon for multiple artists with differing skill sets to work on one piece of art, the delightful little screen is heavy quality and would make a great cabinet piece for your Japanese works of art collection .
