About the Item
Large Meiji Period Cloisonne Enamel Koro
Japanese, late 19th Century
Height 88cm, width 76cm, depth 53cm
This superb cloisonne enamel koro was made during Japan's Meiji period, and is exemplary of the quality of the decorative arts during this short and important artistic period. With craftsmen moving from arms and armour to decorative objects in their stead, a tremendous amount of creative skill was transferred to the making of objects such as this. This koro, or incense burner, memorable for its slight asymmetry and irregularity, is decorated with a sumptuous array of beautifully worked and whimsically arranged floral motifs, set alongside larger images of dragons. The colours have a wonderful vibrancy to them, and the irregularity adds to its overall charm. With its large size, the skill of the decoration, and the excellent condition, it is a excellent example of Meiji period work and creativity.
