Vintage Chinese Republic Period Bronze Archaistic Urn, circa 1930

About the Item

This archaistic Hu form bronze vessel was made in the Republic period just following the end of Chinese Imperial rule. Cast as an honorific venerable object by workers still in possession of ideals from the imperial times. This period shows the skill and craftsmanship still available to artisans before the decline associated with communist rule and the country's long period of isolation and repression. The body of the vessel shows a prominent Taotie mask on each side covering the largest raised section of the body. These masks are common and represent a demonic being shown as frontal with bilaterally symmetrical large raised eyes and typically no discernible lower jaw. This form was used almost from the earliest periods especially on bronze vessels and is considered to have come from even earlier jade carved decorative motifs. The vessel is further decorated with shallow raised flanges that protrude from the corners of the vessel and designate the banded areas as they run down the body of the Hu. At the top of the vessel are lambrequins containing many raised patterns within their borders followed by stylized birds and lastly the bottom is decorated with raised reeding with a wavy pattern to the tapered edges. The Hu has a recently made wood stand that conforms to the shape and size of the piece and is custom made to fit its foot and profile so as to be secure without sliding off. The patinated surface is produced to simulate the age and burial of ritual objects further stimulating the cult of one's ancestral past.

  • Chinese Arcaistic Style Cast Bronze Lidded Urn with Carved Jade Finial
    Located in Hudson, NY
This very finely cast bronze urn in an archaistic form was made in the very late 19th century approximately 1895-1900. Done with an apocryphal feeling to honor the ancient past, the vase is beautifully rendered in low relief in bronze covering almost the entire body of the urn. The predominant features are the divided taotie masks that compose the swelling middle body of the vase and also at the corners of the upper section. Crisp but subtle, the casting is clearly handled with great attention to linear form. The patina is very nice and consists of a modeled golden brown with a slight but very lite Verdigris color. The urn has an old rosewood base and lid that seems to have been purpose made for the object. Finally, the whole is set off with a carved jade finial...
