Burmese Bronze Ava Style Buddha, 19th / 20th Century, Burma

About the Item

A small and charming Burmese cast bronze Buddha in the Ava style, late 19th or early 20th century, Myanmar (Burma). The image depicts the historical Buddha, Shakyamuni, seated in full lotus position, his hands in bhumisparsha mudra, the gesture of calling the earth to witness. One hand rest gently in his lap in meditation, the other reaches over his knee, fingers extended to touch the earth. This gesture commemorates the moment the Buddha reaches enlightenment. The Buddha is dressed in simple monastic robes, his right arm and part of his chest exposed. A sash draped over his left shoulder. The Buddha's face is extremely sweet and serene. He looks out outwards from heavily lidded, almond shaped eyes under high arched brows. A lovely smile upon his lips. His long, pendulous earlobes touch his shoulders. His hair is arranged in neat, tight curls, covering the raised ushnisha. A lotus bud finial tops the ushnisha. The Buddha sits upon a raised, multi-tiered trapezoidal platform with a high, narrow waist to the middle. The bronze with a wonderful deep chocolate brown patina with reddish highlights.
