Burmese Shan Ava Style Bronze Seated Buddha, 19th Century, Burma

About the Item

A nice and classic Burmese Shan cast bronze Buddha in the Ava style, 19th century or earlier, Burma. The Buddha sits upon a stepped and waisted stylized double lotus pedestal, legs in the full lotus position, his hands performing bhumisparsha mudra, the gesture of calling the earth to witness. One hand rests gently in his lap in meditation, the other drapes gracefully over the knee, fingers extended to touch the ground before him. This gesture commemorates the moment the Buddha reaches enlightenment. He is dressed in simple monastic robes that wrap around his body, leaving one arm and part of his chest exposed. A shoulder cloth drapes elegantly over the covered shoulder. His face is broad and serene. Exquisite, almond shaped eyes gaze downwards under high arched brows. A sharp nose presides over a broad mouth set in a sweet smile. Narrow ears with long, pendulous earlobes that touch the shoulders frame his face. His hair is arranged in neat rows of tight curls. covering the low ushnisha. The ushnisha topped by a large and lotus bud finial. The Buddha sits upon a tall, stylized double lotus pedestal, divided into several tiers, and waisted at the center. The bronze with a very dark green, near black, patina. The patina with mottled areas of yellow and brown. Remnants of lacquer apparent as well.
