Rare 19th Century Hand-Carved Chinese Puzzle Ball Chess Set Exquisite Craft Work

We are delighted to offer for sale this lovely very rare 19th-century hand-carved Chinese puzzle ball chess set The chess pieces are totally original and very rare finds, this set is known as the puzzle ball set because no one knows how they carved the bases, you have a highly decorative ball which has on the smaller pieces another highly carved ball inside it, on the larger pieces you have a further two highly carved balls inside the smaller balls, the craftsmanship skill and quality needed to make something like this just blows my mind The set has had various little repairs over the decades, its over 120 years old so we can forgive it a little, there is only one loss which is the flag from one elephant, otherwise there are so little chips here and there, maybe the odd little tiny piece missing in the form of a larger chip, as mentioned its fair wear and tear after decades of display and play. The board came with the set but I think it's possible a later addition, it complements the subtlety of the set nicely, it has lots of lacquer peel and is distressed around the edges Board dimensions: Height 52 cm Width 52 cm Depth 5.5 cm. This item is available for collection from our Wimbledon warehouses. Condition: Please view the very detailed pictures as they form part of the description around condition. Please note vintage period and original items such as leather seating will always have natural patina in the form of cracking creasing and wear, we recommend regular waxing to ensure no moisture is lost, also hand dyed leather is not recommended to sit in direct sunlight for prolonged periods of time as it will dry out and fade.
