Small Thai Seated Bronze Buddha Maravijaya, Ayutthaya, 16th Century
About the Item
A small Thai cast seated bronze figure of the historical Buddha Shakyamuni, Northern Thailand, Ayutthaya period, 16th century.
This sculpture captures the moment before the man known as Siddartha Guatama reaches enlightenment to become the Historical Buddha Shakyamuni. The Buddha sits upon a raised dais in virasana (half lotus position) gazing straight ahead, one hand in his lap, the other hand draped gracefully over his knee, reaching down, but not yet touching the earth. This pose is known as Maravijaya, the Victory Over Mara.
The bronze displays a simply stunning patina of mottled greens (malachite) and reds (cuprite), with a few slight areas of gilding remaining. The patina heavily encrusted, obscuring some details to the face.
Ex. Bonhams San Francisco, 2018.
