Vintage Burmese Reclining Buddha, Carved, Lacquered and Gilt Wood, circa 1970's

About the Item

A charming vintage Burmese Mandalay Style carved, lacquered, and gilt wood figure of a reclining Buddha, 1970's, Burma. The delightful Buddha figure is portrayed resting comfortably and elegantly on his side, supporting his weight on one elbow, his head cradled in his hand. His face is calm and expressive, with painted eyes, long earlobes, a strong nose, and plump lips. His hair arranged in the typical tight curls covering a pronounced ushnisha. The Buddha wears loose fitting robes that hug the contours of his slim body, accentuating his gracious proportions. The hems of the robes decorated in raised thayo lacquer and studded with glass "gems". The Buddha is carved from a single piece of wood, slightly hollowed to reduce weight, and covered in a rich red lacquer, gilt, and embellished with thayo lacquer and glass "gems". Often referred to as a "reclining Buddha" due to the posture, this pose is more specifically called the Parinrivana, representing the final moments of the Buddha's life as he passes from this realm into the state of Nirvana. The calmness of the Buddha indicates he has no fear of death, is at peace, and welcomes his transition in to Nirvana.
