Vintage Shan Burmese Style Gilt Dry Lacquer Buddha Head, circa 1960s, Thailand

About the Item

A serene vintage Buddha head of gilt dry lacquer in the Shan Burmese style, but made in Thailand for the export market, circa 1960s, mounted on a black laminate base. The Buddha head crafted in the dry lacquer technique, and richly gilt. The Buddha gazes out compassionately from heavily lidded and downcast almond shaped eyes above a small nose and smiling mouth. A pair of large ears with pendulous earlobes frame the narrow face. The hairline delineated by an incised band and arranged in neat rows of short spikes. The pronounced ushnisha topped by a tall lotus bud shaped finial. The Buddha head made in the Shan Burmese style, but was almost certainly produced in Thailand for the decorative export market. Mounted on a black laminate stand and base. Measure: height of head off the stand: 12.5"
