English Mid 19th Century Brass Footman with Cabriole Legs and Pierced top
About the Item
English cast brass footman with cabriole legs and pierced skirting on all four sides, twist side handles. It is unusual to have the pierced skirting on the back as well as the other three sides. This quite heavy fine quality footman was originally meant to sit by the fire and keep a kettle warm from the radiant heat. The heavy quality of casting meant that the brass would stay warm for quite awhile, even if the fire burned low; hence so would the water in the kettle. Now the footman is often used next to a chair to put a drink or a book on. Circa 1850. 17" x 12" x 12" high
