19th Century French Iron Fireplace Plaque with Putti, Vertical Orientation

About the Item

This 19th century iron fireplace back channels a Classic romantic motif featuring putti with scrolling filigree in asymmetrical decoration. One putti carries a staff with two serpents intertwined. This depiction of the caduceus is a reference to the staff carried by Hermes in Greek mythology. By extension of its association the caduceus is also a recognized symbol of commerce and negotiation, two realms in which balanced exchange and reciprocity are recognized as ideals.
