Pair of Louis XVI Painted Wood Jardinière Stands
About the Item
The circular container carved with pearls and rinceaux and supported by an inswept strung-piaster quadripartite stand with a central finial and hung with swags raised on a conforming plinth. This stunning pair is very much evocative of the designs of Delafosse (French, 1734-1789), an architect as well as an engraver and decorative designer, and one of the most influential figures in the development of the early neo-grec Louis XVI style. Delafosse used the vocabulary of neoclassical design consisting, as is the case here, in heavy garlands, swags, scrolls, rosettes and other designs all displayed geometrically.
