About the Item

Vintage French ceramic bowl by Gérard Hofmann (circa 1950s). Exquisitely decorated with an interior plant motif in an earthy, enamelled brown, this sizeable bowl makes a statement in the kitchen or on display in another room. Not only is it visually stunning, it is tactile as well with an uneven external surface subtly mimicking the weave of a basket. The creamy backdrop is brushed with a rustic brown at the lip and in the interior decor. It is in very good overall condition. Signature etched on the underside, 'Hof'. Please enjoy the many photos accompanying this listing. Upon request a video can be provided. About the Artist: Gérard Hofmann (1917–1965), French painter and ceramicist. Born in 1917, Gérard Hofmann began a career as a painter before turning to ceramics. In the Riviera town famed for the presence of the artist Pablo Picasso and other well known ceramicists, Hofmann started as a decorator in the pottery studio called Cérenne in Vallauris, France. It was so named by contracting the name of its founder, Charles René Neveux. Employing about 50 people, the workshop was most active from 1949-1959, producing both utilitarian pieces and unique works for the domestic French and international markets. After 1959, Hofmann left Cérenne to open his own studio alongside his wife, Christiane. Together they also created utilitarian ceramics and decorative, original pieces. Their production works were included in Françoise Azais' ceramics exhibitions in La Bergerie, a centre known for showcasing some of the most well known ceramicists in Vallauris. The Hofmanns trademark pieces were in manganese red and of remarkable quality.
